Hi all,
Just buying an e61 and need a bit of advice please.

There are some wifi free areas where the phone can connect to the internet and I understand a voip application can be installed but which is the best/ cheapest one? Google shows many but would rather have a reccomendation from someone on here. A uk dialing code would be good so family can ring me on holiday ( assuming i find free/ cheap wi fi there )

Also I know nothing about email on a phone. Which is the best way to set it up or do i simply put in my outlook express settings? Are other programs needed to run email? My current email add. gets too much mail and spam for phone use so would probably be looking at a new email add.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

I don't know enough about it yet, but according to other forums it isn't quite as straightforward as you'd hope.

Nokia have designed the phone mainly for a wi-fi corporate environment, so at the moment there are firewall traversal issues when used elsewhere. Apparently Nokia will bring out NAT, STUN and ICE methods in the new year.

If that doesn't make much sense to you, I can't help much either. It doesn't mean it's impossible at the moment, but may mean it needs a certain amount of knowledge that can't be obtained yet from Nokia support. So if there are support forums on the products you're looking at, then have a browse there - but some have only the problem not the solution.

Products I've got an eye on but not used include Truphone, Birdstep Smartroaming and Unimobile. I believe Smartroaming solves the issues above, plus others that can occur in certain circumstances.

In theory it should be possible to use VoIP through 3g data access, but this would depend on whether the data tariff was worthwhile.

Sorry not to be more helpful, and I'd be interested to hear how you get on, as I might get a phone like that in the next year or so

3 have just started a deal using a Nokia N73 that you can use Skype on, it called X-series and costs £5 a month on top of your normal monthly fee.

    Hi,
I was going to try use voip with wifi ( meaning in a wifi hotspot ) . I have an orange payg sim that offers unlimited 3g for a day for £1 so thought this would be ideal to use for voip so I did a little experiment .

I have voip stunt on my laptop and connected the laptop to orange 3g using a data cable an an old nokia phone. Browsing the net was fine but when using the voipstunt it broke up often and was bad quality. Not sure if this is bacause in my house is just 3g coverage. When I have the e61 up and running I will let you know more. ( when laptop connected with wifi worked ok)

Thanks for the replies and I will look into what you have said.
