Can I assume some have slept on their poison and thought better of it ?

    An incorrect assumption.

    What happened next.

The Job Centre were more accommodating than some suggested. Having spoken to them earlier in the week by telephone, notes were made and I attended at 8.45 and was seen on the dot of 9, although my appointments have been at 2.20pm.

As bidden, I took along details of the course and these were copied. Without reference to anyone else, the adviser said that my benefit would be unaffected by my course, as the course was likely to be conducive to my employment, provided that I continued in my none too onerous 3 recorded efforts a week to find employment and documented these in the usual way.

We managed to catch a train and get to King's College in time. My hubby still in diagnosis, but so happy to be by his side at a difficult time. The course was wonderful, worth every penny and over the next month or so should result in my self employment.

Not so tricky after all ! Thank you for your advice, so appreciated.
  • Just a word of advice. When you start being self employed, you can indeed carry on claiming JSA if it is under the 16 hours (you would have to declare this and complete the relevant paperwork) BUT you would still have to be looking for other PAYE employment as well and provide evidence (the aforementioned 3 steps a week!) to the JCP and be prepared to accept a job if offered. You would also still have to participate in any mandatory programmes that JCP run (although this is likely to only be the Work Programme now, which is mandatory once you have been unemployed for 12 months). The Self Employment Credit no longer exists and, to my knowledge, has not been replaced by another scheme.
That said, hope it all works out well for you!

Self employment credit is to be replaced by New Enterprise Allowance
