JSA tricky bits

So you can job search while on holiday in Spain but the OP can't job search while on a course in the UK?Absolutely. I told no lies and job searched while in Spain.
They never said anything about lying to the JCP, in fact they asked the JCP what the situation would be.I welcome your posts but would prefer if you didn't ponder lying to the JCP on MSE.0 -
Hi right for wanting to join husband at hospital you can either sign on before you go or you should beable to sign on before the Job Centre Closes you can't attended that day they might let you sign the next day but this will delay your payment by a day.
For the course if its over 16 hours long you will lose money that week because you will be classed as in full time education and you may have to sign off and then back on.
Yes you can go on holiday in uk and not have to sign off, you just attend the Job Centre when you get back and sign on then, so your money will just be delayed.0 -

I have enough time merely to search MSE for tips on 'JSA+holiday' and it took me no time at all - certainly not as long as it would have taken to delete a six year old post in an attempt at revisionism. What I don't have is the time to seek out all the posts by an egotist ( making that assumption from your assumption as to how I came across your quoted post ) who seems to take great delight in revelling in the distress of others from a self perceived high pedestal.
I notice where you tread your acolyte soon follows. What a very sad way to get your rocks off. Whatever gets you through the night be aware I'm more than tough enough - but some of the newbie posters you're bullying may be rather more fragile - have you no shame ?
Sanctimony - sooo unattractive.
Go ahead and have a last word, then hopefully someone else will offer some genuinely helpful advice on my original queries, as your witterings are keeping my queries on the front page - should i 'Thank this poster' ?

Yes, because I was staying with family and had nothing else to do. I also had 24/7 access to a computer and e-mail. The OP will be studying hard every day and probably most evenings. Oh and the period our friendly sleuth has dug out about me is from roughly eight years ago!!
Talk about desperate.Redundolita wrote: »Finally I am wondering if it might be better to say I am going on holiday rather than on a course.
Um, not telling the truth is it??0 -
In the grande scheme of things your husbands needs are greater than anything else at this time. I wouldnt even worry about the JSA if I were you. Phone them in the morning, and explain and they will probably give you a sign on time the following day if you talk to someone with a heart.... if you talk to someone with no compassion you may be told you have to reclaim the following day instead, which would mean losing a day or two's money.
Good luck with your course. I hope you can still concentrate with everything else happening in your life. A retreat... may be just the destresser you need. If you have to lose a weeks jsa it would be worth it surely?:EasterBun

Thank you Daisy.
You're absolutely bang on - I'm sweating the small stuff because I can't do a thing about the elephant in the room.
It is nonetheless empowering to be armed with all the tools I might need in a (future) contretemps with the benefits people. And stops my head exploding !
A small still voice has a calming effect. Thanks again for your post.
Not giving up on my search for an answer to my queries though - just to compound things, my retreat/course starts the Monday following my Friday hospital day.
We can ill afford to throw the £2k course fees away, so have agreed I must go....it's a specialist course for hospice support workers :wall:0 -
With regards to the first signing, you've got two options - the first is to call them first thing in the morning on your signing day and arrange an appointment for the following day, or if you are able to make it to the JCP by about 4.30 that day they should sign you, though you may have to wait to be seen for a bit. They should treat this under Domestic Emergency rules in the circumstances and it should be straightforward, but I would recommend you take some evidence with you of your husband's appointments just in case. Also be aware you can only have 4 domestic emergencies in a year before your case will be referred to a decision maker and your benefit will be suspended whilst they make a decision, so use them wisely. It will be better for you to sign on late the same day rather than the following day if you can.
With regards to the course, as you've told them about it now declaring a period of holiday would be viewed as an attempt at fraud and reported, so don't do it. You may still be able to do the course and receive benefit - you're allowed 2 weeks full time training a year - but certain conditions apply. You will need to be willing to cancel and/or rearrange the training to take work and if you're not prepared to do so they will ask a Decision Maker to disallow you on the basis of a lack of availability for that period, which is one of the basic JSA conditions. If you are prepared to give it up then they should be able to treat you as Actively Seeking whilst you're on the course, though.
Self employment credit has been withdrawn. The New Enterprise Allowance is being rolled out across the country from April but you won't be eligible for this until you've been claiming JSA for 6 months and meet other conditions. You'll need to sign off to get it.
As for self employment whilst claiming, you can do so but you must declare the hours you work and your earnings, which will impact on the benefit you receive. If in any one benefit week (not necessarily Mon-Sun, it will start the day after you sign on) you work over 16 hours your claim will be closed and you'll need to reclaim for benefit to continue.0 -

The cancelling/rearranging would normally apply to ongoing p/t study or courses; if the local office accepted that this was an employment related course then they could be treated as available.0 -
I had to travel to a christening and travelled back on my sign on day. I went to the jokecentre about a week before and the advisor said my options were to either, fill out a holiday form or try to get back before closing on signing day and my payment wouldn't be delayed, the advisor put a note on the system and everything was hunky dory.0

Thanks for your constructive advice, so freely given. I appreciate your time -
Faith restored that as Martin Lewis suggests this is a board for advice, not discussion ( nor judgement ).
Heartfelt thanks to spheredance for defending my position and facing down the shouters, even if that was not his intention !
This morning I notice that there appear to be some posts missing. Can I assume some have slept on their poison and thought better of it ?
Better not. Conjecture is the sledgehammer used by fools to crack a nut.
