The mini sausages are really good ones so we're having those instead of the bacon wrapped ones.
Cheese and biscuits - good idea - I'll add them to the list. One of the guests is bringing gooseberry fool so that'll be a non-pudding alternative.
I've amended my menu in the original post.
Now I need to work out a time plan.
Things I can prepare in advance (ie today and tomorrow):
- peel sprouts
- peel carrots
- prepare red cabbage mixture
- make custard
- make bread sauce
- Mkae stuffing
- make cranberry sauce
The Roasted Sprouts is a new one for me. I found the recipe at https://www.recipezaar.com (FANTASTIC site BTW). It had 124 5 star reviews so I thought it can't be too bad!
As I need to work out the shopping list I'll post it here as it might help someone else ;-)
Im not bothering with peeling sprouts - I get them frozen from Iceland for £1 a bag (me and OH love sprouts and have them at least twice a week!!!!)
if you have a micro put the bread sauce in there about 5-10 minutes before you serve the meal, stuffing I would say put in the oven about 45 minutes before serving (are you doing stuffing balls or just in a dish? are you making your own or using bog standard and adding your own bits and bobs?) carrots can be peeled and chopped the night before just keep them in water to stop them from going dry, I buy my cranberry sauce (i'm lazy!) I dont know re cabbage as I'm not a cabbage fan but I need to know myself as OH loves it, custard (powder or ready made?) if powder probably start 10 mins before serving pud but if ready made (no lumps from panicking or stress!) a couple of mins in micro!0 -
sprouts cooked in chicken stock and bacon (chicken stock takes out the bitterness???? MIL told me that)be loyal, be loud, be cas, be proud

Here's the menu I've come up with for 6-8 people.
Roast Turkey
Mini sausages
Roast Potatoes
Crock Pot Baked Spiced Red Cabbage & Apples/Pears
Glazed Carrots
Roast Parsnips
Roasted Brussels Sprouts!
Whole-Berry Cranberry Sauce
Gravy
White sauce
Xmas pudding
Custard
Cream
Coffee
Juices/wine
Xmas crackers
Have I missed anything?
I'm not English so I'm always a bit nervous about what should be on the menu.
thanks!
I always do & I think this is fairly standard English Xmas dinner......
Starter = Prawn cocktail, served with triangles of brown buttered bread (crusts removed) & a wedge of lemon. I decorate them with a cherry tomato & a slice of cuecumber & they are served on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce.
Main = Roast Turkey, mini sausages with streaky bacon wrapped around, herb & sausagemeat stuffing. Roast potatoes, roast parsnips, steamed brussel sprouts, steamed carrots battoned, Turkey gravy & cranberry sauce.
I don't do bread sauce or serve ham with the turkey, but lots of people do. Lots of people alsp put chestnuts in the brussels (check that one)
Pudding = Xmas pudding & brandy cream, sherry trifle, hot mince pies, cheese board & crackers.
Finished off with coffee floaters (like an Irish coffee, with the Irish) & mints
Don't forget if you want a traditional English Xmas meal, don't forget to get a turkey big enough to make cold turkey sandwiches in the evening, with white sliced bread, butter & plenty of salt. That's really traditional, LOL LOL LOL
Nice white wine (& red if any of your guests like red) & crackers.
Don't get stressed with all the cooking & enjoy yourself :-)0 -
Do all the preparation Christmas eve so you aren't running around cooking too much Christmas Day. It makes it so much easier.
Also a treat for Christmas eve - a joint of roast pork with loads of crackling served with crusty or soft white bread rolls, stuffing, apple sauce and loads upon loads of roast potatoes. Yum....3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!
