Have you got MS Office (earlier than 2007)? If so then you need to download the relevant compatability pack to open .docx, the earlier ones are .doc only.
If not, why not just use Open Office, which is a free download?
MS Works or Notepad will not do the job.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Several suggestions here - but they all ultimately require you to have Word or Openoffice

You can open it for free using MS Word Viewer combined with the aforementioned compatibility pack:

or try Idiophreak's method to use .docx with Word.0 -
Open office is the way to goSurvey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740

as above ditch MS works as nobody else tends to use it or be compatible with it.
Get open office and you'll be able to open and save things as .doc and other normal MS Office formats which everyone tends to use0 -
You can *read* docx files in openoffice, but have to save back as .doc or .odt0
