New Phone Required

Hello all - your help required,

I need a new mobile phone -- my existing one is on it's last legs and I don't have a clue which one to choose. I only use around 150 mins and 200 txts a month as most. I don't require web access and i'm looking to pay as little as possible.

At present I have a sim-free contract with O2, however, can change this as the min. term has expired a while ago. I have been thinking of changing to PAYG.

For the amount I use - would people recommend PAYG or signing up to a new contract.

Many thanks

    200+500 - Talkmobile rolling £8 contract
    350+300 - Chittter-Chatter rolling £10
    250+Unltd - giffgaff £10 'goodybag'

Cheapest phones are available for 1p+£10, £4.90+£10, £9.90+£10 etc. at CPW, e2save, osps, mobiles.co.uk before quidco/TCB cashback.

I would suggest looking at Orange PAYG used like this -

Orange Monkey - top up £10 per month.
This will give you 300 (soon 400) free texts without using top up credit

Also buy a 100 minute extra from your credit (this will cost £5 from your top up credit). This will cover the first 100 minute of calls for 30 days.

Any call over this will cost just 5p per min from your credit - but only if you use them. So if you use your estimated maximum of 150 mins, that's £7.50 of your credit used in total, but if you only use 100 or less then it's only £5 of your credit used.

Unlike a SIM-only contract, this method may only cost £5 per month if you use no more than 100 mins and 300 texts, and even if you do use your projected 150 max, still only £7.50 per month.

This means that you're not needing to use the full £10 you top up each month and some months will have a balance well over £10 before you top up. When this happens, instead of topping up, buy the minute extra as normal, but you could also buy a £5 text extra, which would provide unlimited texts for that month (even though you may only want 200) but it will mean you don't top up. So, every 4 or 5 months you'll have a month where you don't need to top up!

If you're happy with the above plan, you could get Sony Ericsson W205 from Argos for £45 which includes £60 Orange credit - £10 a month for 6 months, perfect for the above plan. By paying upfront for credit, you get the phone FREE and £15 credit thrown in to the bargain.
