Persistent speed problem

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
Five months ago I bought an Hp G56 Notebook. A month ago it was running slow so I phoned the Virgin helpline who talked me through speeding it up. Now the same thing has happened again and I don't remember what I did to improve speed, except I had to change some number or shorten it, or something? At the moment I have

ping 82 ms - download speed 0.30mbps - upload speed 0.78mbps

when I pay for a lot more, obviously!

Would be grateful for any advice, please
Tia

the notebook is slow or the internet connection is slow?

have you tried turning the router of for 5 minutes and if still slow try a wired connection

if the machine is slow, post a hijackthis log

hi, tried turning off the router but it made no difference, figures still very similar. With a wired connection I have

ping 59 - download speed 0.76 - upload speed 0.84, so still not good

Can you explain 'post a hijack log', please?

    Thanks

Do you know how to log into the router to check the speed of the connection.

is it in the master socket or an extension?

No I'm afraid I don'y know how to log into the router. It's plugged into a 6-gang socket extension with all the other comp bits, as it always has been.

I'll post the results of the Hijack this thing but doubt anyone can make head nor tail of it!...

It's Netgear MR814. I have another one the same still in its box, but loathe to change it over as it'll probably need a more techie person than me to set it up..

He means.. how is the router connected to the phone line?...

Is the router plugged in directly to the BT master socket, or is it plugged in via a telephone extension socket?

Is there a microfilter fitted to *every* telephone in the house?

Try connecting the router to the test socket hidden behind the faceplate of the BT master socket.

The Netgear mr814 router supports both wireless and wired connections from your computer.

How are you connecting? Via wireless or using an ethernet cable from your computer to the router?

It's quite an old router and only supports 802.11b (up to 11Mbps).. Also, the default setting is for wireless encryption to be 'off'. (which means your internet activities can easily be monitored)

It's typical in a poor reception environment for wireless bandwidth to drop to the sort of speeds you are reporting.

    Click on this.. http://www.routerlogin.net

    Enter the username : admin
    and the password: password

Click Maintenance / Router Status / Show Statistics

What is shown under the Status column for WLAN and WAN ?

I *think* you're on Virgin cable? If so post#8 is irrelevant.
