I emailed Knowhow about the durability of the laptop and my concern over the £50 fee, asking if I can take it to a local shop for assessment instead. They replied:

With regards to your email, If you wish to take your item to a local 3rd party engineer to asses what has caused the fault if they believed the item has become faulty due to a manufacturing fault please attach a copy of the assessment along with the charge you have had to pay for this. Once I have this information confirming the item is a manufacturing fault we would refund the cost of this charge for you.

Once this is confirmed we would then require to uplift the laptop from you and for it to be sent to our repair centre for the fault to be repaired.

Seems quite reasonable of them. I will email a few local stores to ask what they charge and take it from there.

The local shop wanted £35 to do an insurance report, so in the end I gave up, ordered a new laptop and have listed the HP laptop with the keyboard fault on Ebay! I will be getting a 3-year warranty for the new laptop to prevent a similar situation reoccuring.
