Just walk along the line of cars waiting for the ferry and look where they have the sticky tape etc. Gendarmes won't know the exact position for every car.
You do need them in daylight if the G's are looking to make their quotas.

Yes if there are 2 people, also must be available - NOT in the boot.

No, I asked the gendarmes, you only need one vest for the driver, everyone else can theoretically stay in the car and not require one.

We have been to France loads and have never used the deflecters. Why should we when they never use them over here!

Also, I thought it was a vest for every member of the car, not just driver but agree with the accessable part - not in the boot.

Sorry, that's right, should have said one for each person who leaves the vehicle following accident or breakdown.
Of course the driver can also theoretically stay in the vehicle.

You also need a GB sticker if you don't have a Euro registration plate. Another item I have never taken with me.

Maybe, it's better to start being 100% legal and take/fit all the required items. I might run out of luck if I don't.

How come foreign motorists don't have to do the same whilst driving in the UK?

I imagine they would be required to have beam deflectors and a country designation - which might be already on their number plate.

All the other crap isn't required by our laws.

Then he'd get fined for not putting out his warning triangle :D

Those warning triangles are also pretty cool they stand out even in day time - but you need one with a dayglo orange fabric as well as a reflector, the dayglo is for the daytime - the reflector is for nightime.

We saw one from a few 100 yds on the road ahead and there was no car in sight that it belonged to, there was also a corner ahead of the triangle......... we slowed and just around the corner was a stranded car. I was impressed.
