tomatoe plant in easy fill hanging basket?

hi everyone,

ive got some 100s and 1000s tomato variety do you think they would be ok in the easy fill hanging baskets and how many would you recomend putting in?

I don't know what an easy fill hanging basket is but I grew the same variety in 'normal' 12" hanging baskets last year and they did pretty well. I had 2 plants per basket. Have to say though, I wouldn't bother with them again.....got loads of tomatoes but they really are tiny and were really annoying and time consuming to harvest and didn't taste half as good as the cherry tumbling toms I usually grow.

Saying that, this year I am growing an upright variety called 'red currant' which also has teeny tiny fruits so I'll see if they are any easier to harvest!

I've grown these for last 2 years and had much more success in tall pots rather than baskets. I'm in Scotland and garden not very sheltered so if you can give them a warm sheltered spot then should be ok.

If the baskets aren't large then I would possibly limit to 1 with some extra plants such as marigold so it looks less bare to start with. If given space I've found they can grow pretty big. A big basket can take up to 3 but as these are not cheap for seed or plantlets I would personally limit to 2 max.

As lisa26 says they are a huge pain to harvest as so small and so many although I found the taste excellent and if there any kids around they seem to love them and harvest by continual grazing! That said I now only grow a few and concentrate on other varieties.

Thanks royg, I have a nice sheltered spot in the garden for them , and some spare marigolds to go with them
