i was all set to buy one of these until i did an insurance quote... cheapest was £1100 for a 23 year old, 5 years no claims, 1 accident not at fault. needless to say i wont be purchasing one now.
bearing in mind its a 2006 600cc mini car i thought it was ridiculous... right now im paying 800 for my honda civic 1.8 2008
the reason why people buy these is for the engine... yes its a 2 cylinder loud and only moderately efficient industrial engine from kubota but because its an industrial engine and it also has a swirl chamber that heats up fuel hotter than direct injection engines it makes it perfect to run on vegetable oil rather than diesel fuel.
i planned on adding an inline fuel heater to test and would possibly try a 2 tank veggie oil system on mine. whereby the car starts on diesel, heats up then switches over to vegetable oil. when you reach your destination the car purges all veggie oil in the fuel lines with diesel ready for its next cold start.
the cheapest vegetable oil at the moment i can find using quidco and vouchers is just 66p and no longer requires you to pay fuel tax to the government. Diesel on the other hand is approximately £1.45?0 -

If you need to go to the trouble of adding an inline heater and a 2 tank system why not buy an actual car that you can do the same with?0 -

thats exactly what im doing, think ill probably pick up a corsa or yaris although the conversion is will be tougher for them (less room in the engine bay and a direct injection engine rather than the indirect injection on the axiam). the reason i was choosing the aixam was the price of the car, its indirect injection engine (which heats up fuel better than a direct injection engine does) and what i thought would be cheap insurance, boy was i wrong about the insurance!0
