Aixam 500 - Lots of questions.

I've just bought an Aixam 500 for my wife and went to look for insurance and found it to be very high, does anyone know of a cheap insurer.

also

I don't understand how that road tax is £130 for the year when the emissions should be lower than the average diesel.

Small engine does not mean a clean burning one. Not sure if they are rated on emissions?
I was looking at a small daewoo lanos 1400cc it was in the same tax band as my 2L petrol mondeo.

Maybe rated on non type approved vehicle?

No such thing as a cheap insurer, You need to phone all of them to find the cheapest for you. Direct line
were the cheapest for me for many years then 2 years ago started quoting silly prices. Despite never making a claim.

It uses a diesel engine out of a mini-digger (I'm not joking), so emissions will be higher as plant is not taxed like cars and vans so the engines tend not to be as refined. Surprised about the insurance though (might have something to do with the rarity of Axiam's in this country and therefore, the repair costs).

  • their fitted with a kubota engine whilst they supply engines for diggers etc does not mean theres one out of a digger fitted in a aixam, and their not a gass guzzler co2 pewker they are economical. they really didnt catch on in britain due to the max 55mph top speed and not much room in them although aixam did level the boot down to floor level after some more thinking.. if your a single couple and looking for the cheapest fuel wise car for town driving its a thumbs up, but due to them being pricey to repair, and most engine parts have to be bough main dealer or from kubota themselfs, and classed as quad bike (with roof and doors) effectively your not going to see your saving for quite a while

Aren't these things like 7 grand new?

So more expensive to buy, tax and insure than the likes of a 107/C1/Picanto/Panda - undoubtedly less safe and more expensive to fix too?

Where's the sense in this again?

Where's the sense in buying the thing without checking out how much the insurance is first? :(

Kilty makes a good point, there doesn't seem to be much to favour them over a Picanto or similar. Nothing at all that I can think of.

their quite cheap as reg'd demo or pre owned. their not favoured due to their lack of parts available and top speed.

to answer your question, not much sense but cheap enough second hand. i gave them a thumbs up because they are a econamical vehicle for urban town use.

    There is one round here.

    What a heap of crap.

The only reason anyone would even look at one is presumably because they don't need a car licence to drive them, AFAIK, because they are quadricycles.

You must really hate your wife lol.

A bit late now, but quads aren't subject to the same strict safety criteria as 'normal' cars. Good luck in a head-on.

Saying that, the qpod one built by Noel Edmunds' company looks quite fun to drive.

These things aren't meant for heavy mileage either, lots of gearbox failures out there.
