Big Markup on MOT?

Hammyman - I didn't expect them to hand me the invoice they had been given by the sub-contractor and just pay that - not by any means, however I am a little hacked off at the extortionate rate they are charging for a few phonecalls, which is all they have done. I have paid for my MOT separately. I guess I just don't like feeling like I've overpaid by a massive amount. Like I said before - lesson learned! Won't be going there again!0

Just be happy the car is still on the road.0

whats the problem? they made a few calls, they took it to their subcontractor (a loss of a worker who may have been on a job at the time).
bisinesses make markups to survive.
they did the mot at what the rate is and not over charge like some private garages or chain groups, coucil run garages make very little profit from MOT's if at all, call the 35% mark up as a tip for them arranging the car to be taken there having the job done properly and satisfactory as to meet conditions of the mot and make your car strong and safe again. what if the rust was so bad on an anchor point for your seatbelts?? you have a bump and the force rips the belt from its anchor because it was week and rotten?0 -
Dodgy thieving Garages, how dare they have a 35% profit margin on the cost price of a job.
Don't know how they sleep at night!
Surprised the OP didn't do the welding themselves if there is so little to it.
Why do we never hear about all those local shopkeepers that over charge for a can of Pepsi, went to one the other day and a 330 ml can was 77p!!!!!
When you consider that a can of Pepsi is less than 20p at Costco that is over 200%, now that is a serious mark-up.0 -
Markup on a dominos pizza is 900% -
Have a look on thismoney website (Cant post links, grrr)!
Your deal doesnt seem so bad now0 -
Thanks for your replies - the reason I was so shocked was that I really didn't think that a council run MOT centre would profit so much - after all they made 3 phonecalls at the most ( one to get the quote, one to me to tell me the quote and one back to the other garage to authorise the work ) which have cost me in the region of £100 - much more than any other service I can think of! Obviously the bill will have to be paid tomorrow - a lesson has certainly been learnt here - I couldn't afford to take time off work to take my car to other garages for them to assess the amount of work needed to be done to get a quote - but hey ho - that's life I guess. I will ask them tomorrow for a breakdown of the charges and I will mention the 35% and see how they react. If they had done the work needed on site then fair enough, but the fact that they've sent it off and added this on seems wrong to me? £100 for 2 phonecalls seems really excessive. I guess I won't be going there next year!
Then there's getting the car to the welders, all the admin, overheads, insurances etc. If you didn't want to anyone to earn a profit, why didn't you do the work yourself? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Thats the price you pay for being bone idle and taking the easy option.
My wifes markup at her sign company is typically 170% on materials. They are considered cheap.0 -
Its definately a council centre - its Halton council testing depot.
Problem is, it don't take much for someone to take backhanders for passing work to a "mates" garage.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
