I think the issue is more the use it has had. If he'd watched it every day then fair enough, but it's only been used for about 2 hours a month.

they go on average use, not individual circumstance.

It could be something simple like a power spike or similar that took it out - that could happen to a TV used every minute of every day in 18 months or one on standby for 18 months.

Time of use in individual circumstances doesn't really come into it.

The Sale of Goods Act does not require businesses to issue receipts to customers, therefore a receipt is not required for a refund/replacement. What the SoGA does say is that the retailer has the right to see proof of purchase. In the absence of a receipt you can use credit/debit card statements to evidence a transaction.

If you paid in cash you might find that a little difficult.

Or if you have a clubcard, it will be on there
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

How did you manage to get this? My technika is about 10 months old, and tesco only offered a repair, what i want is a refund....

If the thing is inherently faulty, you are entitled to a remedy.
That remedy can be either a repair, or replacement or a refund.
A refund could be partial, taking into account the use you have had.

You can choose the remedy, but the retailer does not have to agree to that choice if it is disproportionate.

So, effectively, the retailer can choose the remedy.

But that would mean that you would have had the use of the TV totally free for the past 10 months.
If the law was change to insist that refunds must be given for faulty goods, can you imagine how many people would deliberately damage goods after 10 or 11 months so that they could get a refund and then upgrade to a better TV.
