    Couple of things here...

47Kg cylinders may be great for a caravan or lets but I'm struggling to see the point for a home as bulk tanks work out cheaper? Using up to two a week in winter sounds very pricey.

I have a bulk LPG tank, 65% full, which is under contract for another year with Calor but topups are suspended as we no longer use it for heating, only cooking. Are they likely to jack up the rental? Once empty the tank will be removed.

    Thanks

Picking up on the original text... I was with Flogas and moved very successfully to a local supplier. when I moved, I had to sign an agreement for 2 yrs, they told me that the tank would need to be replaced, said their company policy was around 15yrs. Anyway they have just changed and they were excellent, replaced what I thought was an illegal fence around the tank without a problem. I still get a good deal from them . Only have top ups when I want can pay for as little as 500l

Wow, last winter I was using 2 x 47 kg tanks a week fro heating and hot water!! I was not leaving the heating on for a very long time either,

You might want to get your boiler efficiency and insulation checked - that sounds like a LOT! We were warned that, if using it for heating, we could get through 2 a month. But we're not - see below.

We have used one cylinder and a bit since March as have only been using combi for hot water but used to get through 2 a week in the winter and the heating was barely on. In fact we considered putting in a tank but are now thinking of going for a heat pump or wood pellet boiler in view of the RHI...

ASHP is what we've gone for - £850 govt incentive to install it, bringing 11kw NIBE system to £5800. Possible RHI payments from next year.

This is where you need to open a copy of Excel and plug in as much info as you can. For 7 months a year, our LPG is used only for cooking. Water heating is off-peak immersion. CH boiler is off.

I don't know about Calor, but certainly a usage under about 1000 litres a year seems to attract the £200 p/a rental penalty from Flogas.

In our case, removing the bulk tank has saved £200 a year in rental.
The switch to ASHP primarily to operate on an off-peak tariff, using the current LPG boiler as the emergency backup as part of a bivalent system has allowed us to reduce the heat pump cost and still provide option of emergency boost when temps fall below -10 outside or system fails.

A log burner provides further heating and cooking (well, saucepan of soup/baked beans!) in the living room in case of total electricity failure.

Before ANY of this is/was considered, we invested a not-inconsiderable amount in insulation and this has provided a noticeable and significant improvement to our comfort and bills.
  • Yet another reminder or how poor Flogas customer service is... avoid!
Hopefully about to leave them now our metered estate contract is coming to an end
