In Morrisons today and saw the Strawberries "special offer " 1/2 price off English strawberries ! £1.90 ! 1/2 price ?? but the worst thing was when i checked the Variety in the pack it was Sentana ! the tastless rubbish the spanish grow for the UK market and which no Spaniard would ever eat !
So Overpriced and over here rubbish for the british public again !
Local market £1 per punnet and local grown & sweet !
So are Morrisons importing Spanish rubbish , repacking and branding as "English" perfectelly legal but underhand ?

Maybe they are growing that variety somewhere in England too?

Talking about overpriced fruit and veg, I bought a pepper today, I didn't bother to look at the price as it was just one pepper, normally I wouldn't notice the price as I don't check receipts, I used the self-checkout today though, so had plenty of time to see the price while it goes 'unexpected item in bagging area' etc, it was 80p!!! For one pepper!!!
It was a very pretty pepper, it was a nice shade of orange, and it tasted very nice, very sweet, much nicer than the green red yellow ones you get in packs of 3, but still, 80p!!!

Not sure if that would be perfectly legal. The rules around labelling are pretty vague but a supermarket could still be in trouble for misleading customers. Did you check the country of origin? This must be accurate. If it said Spain but the strawberries were called 'English strawberries' I'd take the packet back to Morrisons (and possibly contact Trading Standards). I think 'English strawberries' means 'strawberries grown in England' and I think everyone else would too.

Suggest you get down off your high horse and read the label again !

Since when has the name of a particular variety of strawberry told you where it was grown ?
My father always liked Royal Sovereign - that doesn't mean the Queen grew them !!!! or perhaps it does to you .............

I grow King Edwards in my garden. Does that mean i'm breaking the law as King Edward isn't growing the Potatoes. What about all those law breakers who eat Cheddar cheese in area's other tha Cheddar in Somerset.

Certain names have lost their 'attachment' to whatever it was for which they were named in the first place.

English and 'French' mustard being further cases in point in addition to the examples you mentioned above.

Unless, however, 'English' is a known type as in such things as mustard, muffins, or breakfast tea, an article labelled 'English' must come from England to comply with labelling laws.

No, but I thought I'd mention it because it does relate to the OP in a serious manner in that you cannot complain that English mustard does not come from England or that Cheddar cheese does not come from Cheddar but you most certainly can complain if English tomatoes are discovered to be grown in Spain.

Did anybody notice last summer, strawberries in all the big supermarkets including M&S were 1/2 price all the way through. Do these shops think we are do-lally. We know when a product is really 1/2 price or not. Don't insult us !!!!!!!!
