I have downloaded several free books, and to be honest some of them were total shockers. I have in the past however read the synopsis of books in WH Smith (or wherever) and though it sounded good was indeed another shocker.

The free books offered are not only classics or trash. Jeffrey Archer's "KANE AND ABEL" was free for a limited time. Not my cup of tea, but by no means an "unwanted and unloved book"

I would think the Kindle, or any other ebook has been a godsend to self publishing writers. Their market has been greatly increased due to the ease with which their work can be distributed.

Horses for courses (as has already been said) i would not be without mine to read books.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

What are the titles of your 200 free e-books? Are they just the old "classics" that no one reads save for schoolkids who have no choice? Or do you sometimes find a free e-novel, like you see stuck to the front of women's magazines?

Quality not quantity, sweetheart! That's what i always tell my pestering wife!

Dont be so damn patronising !!

NO theres not one classic on them, thats not my kind of book at all. And no not a freebie like youd get on a womans magazine

I have a variety of genres of books, from an assortment of authors Some are a few years old some are in the current charts I can honestly say hand on heart ALL the books I have are books Id actually have bought.

I havent got any of the Amazon freebie books because theyre not my thing and Im not going to start reading them just cos theyre free.

There are loads of sites out there with up to date books. So for the £20 Ive paid for my 200 books its 200 books I DO want to read - sweetheart!!

3G is absolutely wicked. Am addicted to my Kindle. Definitely get the 3G or you are likely to regret it IMO. You;ll always feel something missing.

Id disagree with that, I got the wifi one because I didnt see the point in paying the extra for 3g, Im not going to use my Kindle to browse online, i Im out and about Id use my phone for that. Ive never once felt I made the wrong decision in not going 3g

Id rather use the money I saved in getting the wifi one to buy accessories or books ;)

BREAKING: Kindle price reduced in the US to $114 (~£70)..

    http://www.google.com/search?q=kindle&hl=en&safe=off&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=628&tbs=cat:3539,pdtr0:720064|720067,p_ord:p&tbm=shop&cad=h

Once Amazon has shaved another £50 off that ludicrous price, I might even buy a Kindle. Not for reading books, you understand.. Just so I can abuse the 3G modem and help bork the entire business plan.

I have the Kindle app on my iPod Touch but it makes reading uncomfortable because of the small screen so I really want a proper Kindle because I adore reading and think that it would be a good investment. Unfortunately I can't afford one at the moment as other things take priority. Maybe I should put it on my birthday list? My birthday's in December and the OH won't have the excuse that I didn't tell him what I wanted. :p

Ludicrous price? Not half as ludicrous as you thinking the majority of people actually pay to download e books lol

The local charity shop often has a clear-out and sells five paperbacks for a quid. That's 555 books for the cost of your Kindle, and the books don't need a battery (with an 18 month lifespan) to read them.

And I know that my charity shop book purchases will be doing good, saving the lives of orphaned kittens all around the world.

How can you live with yourself knowing that every e-book you buy nudges the Amazon chief executive, Jeff Bezos, even higher up the Forbes Rich List?

Currently Bezos is the 26th Richest Man in the World, with a personal fortune of a disgusting $9 billion. A "philanthropist" indeed!

Laughing all the way to the bank: Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos

I see from his bio that Bezos is a former Wall Street hedge fund manager, so he's no stranger to ripping off the little people!

EDIT: Close of business on the NASDAQ, Amazon stock was up to $193.27. Market capitalisation of the company is $87.37b, and Bezos holds 20% of that stock. So he's worth a cool $17bn in Amazon shares alone, without even counting his property portfolio. That man doesn't know the meaning of the word "free".

Aaaah yes the recycled book theory, it also passes none of the excess price back to the author , good, but of course an ebook helps the orphaned government of the UK 'cos they attract 20% VAT whereas the paperbook doesn't (despite trees, global warming via delivery etc)
Thanks for reminding me Asbokid (ps apologies ;) I have some bad days)

Hmmm, tossing up between kindle or tablet..... will spend a lot more time considering before birthday season is upon us.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
