I have been shocked at some of the amswers,I am 47 and started work part time at 14 then when I left school at 17 I started work. In the last 30 years I have been unemployed for 4 weeks. I thought this board was to helppeople not to wrongly judge them. There is no way I would encourage my son to go on the dole but he has still got to live .

I am shocked at some of the responses here. I live in a large town close to other towns and cities. My daughter is in full-time education and is finding it impossible to get a part-time job. Yes, there are quite a few advertised but either they don't respond to applications or they require someone to be fully flexible regarding working hours - obviously in f/t ed this is not possible.

OP, please ignore the negative and sarcastic answers, not everyone on MSE is like that thank goodness.

so just ignore them responses then or get a thick skin, i get replies to threads i started that i dont like but i just ignore them

You people make it sound soo easy to get job on at the moment.

For every job out there, there is at least 50 people applying for it. Also with more and more redundancies happening there is more people becoming unemployed.

no one is saying its easy, if you get rejected for a job you pick yourself up and move on to the next 1, you have to make yourself more employable than the rest which is in the hands of the 1 looking for work

Going by your post, i'd suggest you take a look at your CV for any spelling or grammatical mistakes, you never know!

If you're willing to do temp work, or work in a factory environment, there are a good amount of jobs out there.

As he will have left education, your child benefit and child tax credits will end and therefore he'll be able to claim jobseekers - cannot get child benefit/CTC if the 'child' is claiming benefits in their own right.

In terms of jobhunting he needs to make sure he's tailoring his CV/applications to the job he's applying for. It may sound like a simple thing but it's difficult when you're not used to applying for jobs to work out what you need to put on the forms.

Has he signed up to temp agencies? They're a good way of building up a work history even if it means doing something you dislike for awhile. My first job was packing bras into boxes in a warehouse. Mindnumbingly dull and I had to get up very early to get there on time but it got me money and meant I could show that I could regularly and reliably turn up for work and work a whole day. I found it's much easier to get a job when you're already working.

It may be helpful for him to have a look at the information on here:

I've never been the best of spellers, i'll openly admit that. But that has NOTHING to do with the topic so don't make it personal.

And before you ask, yes I am employed.

To be fair, from your post it sounded like you were unemployed, so I was just giving you a little bit of advice.
