er.... who is "they", and what exactly do you want to do. Buying a domain name does not give you web hosting usually, if it does then you are probably charged more for the purchase.
I use UKREG/fasthosts prices are reasonable, 2.95 +vat per year for co uk, and you can point your domain name anywhere, eg if your current IP provides web space you can upload your page there and point your domain to that address.
eg your domain www.yourname dot co dot uk then re-direct to your www id dot your isp dot whatever. you could always use free hosting and do the same.
domains last 1 or more years depending on what you buy.0 -
Cheapest or best ??
I have used 1 & 1 for some years without any problems.

If it's for a business application, you could have a look at: Google GBBO - getting British Business Online .........
Which is free .......
The website facilities are VERY basic though!0 -
It may not be best to go for the cheapest as they may not be the easiest to deal with. If you are a novice, spending a few pounds more may be worthwhile!0

If you have put up a website on a Host who say you need a domain, then you'll need to know their nameserver addresses. Whoever you get your domain from you then simply set the nameserver addresses to point to those of your host. All you are doing is deciding what you want to call the website (like moneysavingexpert.com) and paying a company to register the name for you so anyone who types your domain into their web browser gets directed to the host where your website is.
It doesn't matter who you are buying the domain name from if its separate to your Web Host as its the same one-time setting. I'm not sure paying more would help as they would all point you to the support pages (you're not buying additional products like hosting from them).
You don't say what type domain name. Is it a country specific, like .co.uk these are all about £2.99 a year and you have to register/renew every 2 years (other country domains like .at .it all have different costs registration lengths).
Is it a top level domain (like .com) then you can get these for anywhere from £5 upwards per year and can be registered from 1 to 10 years.0
