Hi I have an iphone 3gs and for the last 2 weeks I have noticed that when the phone is charging by both USB attached to computer or mains adapter (official Apple one) the battery bar shows an electric bolt when it is charging up until 95/96% then it will change to the mains adapter sign (hopefully Apple users will know what I mean by that). The phone's battery % does not fill up any further and even if I unplug the power supply and plug it back in the phone will not charge anymore and the mains adapter icon is shown in the battery meter in the top right of the screen.

Is the phone broken or is it a safety feature or something?

Thanks in advance

Most likely it means one of two things, one is the battery is getting on and can't take 100% of the original charge or the battery meters out of calibaration.

Lithium batteries can take thousands of charge cycles if well cared for but can die in tens of cycles if abused, there is no set number of cycles you'll get before it dies. They suffer the most if they are left discharged for a long period of time, discharge them too much and they'll never charge again. My wifes iPod gets left uncharged as she used it then forgets to charge it and the battery suffers, nd as a result we've been through 5 or so battery packs. To try and prevent over charging once a battery hits full charge (as deptermined by the current needed to charge the battery) the phone stops charging which is what you are seeing.

Forget the numbers and see how it lasts, if it still lasts all day forget the numbers but keep an eye on it, replacment batteries are easily sourced and and fitted, either DIY, by Apple or the local phone ship.

Hi thanks for the very detailed reply.

I am still finding the battery lasts okay. The phone is only 3 months old nearly but I got it as a replacement from an Apple shop as my last one had a fault. I presume it was a refurbished one. I don't know wether to take it back and explain the problem as its covered by the 90 day warranty for replacement products?

    Thanks
