just wondered about this. my work have given me the internet key so i can use the internet on my laptop when im not technically on shift but am there eg (sleep in) for research on paperwork etc
however the shifts are long and its a cut off location i just wondered whether they would be able to trace if i had a sneaky look on my emails, facebook etc

Depends on their system, if the run a server, then yes they probably would, even if they do not then the broadband modem may.
Why don't you just ask if it is OK to check your e-mails in your off time, I expect they will say yes, facebook/youtube may be a different thing.0 -
thanks
its just run through a normal bt homehub
i would ask but i havent been working there long and i dont wanna take the mickEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -

I would ask permission, one thing for sure they will know if they know where to look, even the average ' schoolie ' knows where to look !Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. almost certainly they would be able to / even home networks now allow on/off access to the network and visibility of machines on the network and which sites are being accessed (router config setup ) /BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

they would technically be able to tell, but using just a BT homehub it seems unlikely they would bother. Also what are you worying about? In your off time you can do whatever you want right? So you are worried about them being angry that you use their connection for checking your private email? I can't comment on the type of people but do they have any IT policy? While it's likely to say you con't use their connection for looking at illegel & indecent material, a blanket ban on any private use would be rare.
If they did do that the solution is simple: Get yourself a mobile broadband or a smartphone with inetnert (wich you can connect to your laptop to use the internet)0 -

Have they given you their internet usage policy declaration to read and to sign?0

It is certainly worthwhile asking for permission, and you should also consider getting it in writing. It isn't that uncommon for perfectly respectable, hard-working and esteemed employees to find themselves out of a job as a result of an act of gross misconduct if this constitutes one in your employment contract, don't take the risk.
Check through your contract in advance of asking them, you may also have signed a separate IT/Internet Policy document when you were employed that says what you can and cannot do with the work computers.0
