The main phone line is in the lounge in a corner. In the other corner of the room connected wirelessly via a WG111T to a thomson TG585 v7 is a desktop computer

Upstair in a back bedroom I have my home office. There isnt a phone line in this room

Can you not use the already working thomson router and plug a dongle into the office computer to connect to it?.

why or how would i remember a password that i set up 2 years ago and have never had the requirement to use it since

because that is the only way for you to access the internet !!!!!

Did you not keep the welcome letter confirming your account ???

Unfortunately I've seen this happen too often, especially from non-techies. Do it once, then totally forget important login info :( How can you play with different routers if you can't set them up :p

If you really don't know/can't find the username/password, phone your ISP and ask them.........

STILL, it doesnt appear to be working as a wireless router!

I am typing this message connected to the net via the new router BUT my laptop is connected to the router with a Ethernet cable
I have taken the USB upstairs and installed it on my home office desktop. The wizaed runs fine but whe it asks if i want help connecting the list of connections that comes up does not show my connection

What the !!!! is going on.....this is starting to hack me off

    Have you tried:
    • connecting the laptop to the router using the laptop's internal wireless adaptor?
    • connecting the laptop to the router using the USB wireless dongle?
It might be that upstairs is just too far to get a wireless connection with the Netgear router. Wireless is first class pants.
The wizaed run fiane but whe it ask if i want help connecting the list of connections that comes up does not show my connection
So a list of wireless access points (APs) is displayed, but your Netgear wireless AP is not amongst them?

If that's the case, at least you know that the USB wireless dongle works okay. What is the default wireless network name for the Netgear router? Perhaps it is not obvious that it is one of the APs in the list?
What the fuck is going on.....this is starting to hack me off

download inssider to your laptop and check for a. your router's signal and b. wifi congestion -

    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

if there are other routers operating on channels 1, 6 and 11, then these are also the default wifi channels for various netgear routers, so chances are someone else's router is interfering with your netgear. Log into the router and change the wifi channel to one that is either not in use or with as little crossover as possible, then try it again :)

Tried logging into router using 192.168.0.1
Not even that page would open. Also tried 192.168.1.0

Laptop is running windows 7 so not sure if that is creating a problem

which, the netgear or thomson ?? wired or wifi ?? Sorry, but you're not being very clear about what/how you're doing stuff....

    1. netgear addy should be 192.168.0.1, login prob admin/password

    2. thomsons usually use 192.168.1.254, OTTOMH cant remember default login

    3. use an ethernet cable between lappy and router to login and get the settings right before going wireless.

    4. DON'T use the wifi dongle on the lappy, use the built-in wifi when the time comes

    5. no setup should be required for the wifi dongle in the pc upstairs, windows should have a driver to suit, let windows install it itself, all you should then need is the wifi key/password to connect pc to router

    6. ensure wifi is switched on in the router's config pages....

from the laptop, using an ethernet cable ???

did you buy the router off the shelf, or is it from an ISP (which m,eans they may have paid for custom firmware in it which could have changed the default address) ??
