For 2 years I have been using a thomson Router supplied by plusnet when i signed up with them along with a Netgear WG111T USB thing
I have been unable to connect to my modem in my office upstairs using the WG111T
I have recently bought a Netgear DGNB2100 modem/router that comes with a USB
How/What is the best way to set up this modem/router and USB
Reading the instructions it states i have to put in the CD and then connect the modem/router to the computer using a Ethernet Cable?
The problem I have is that the dektop is nowhere near to the phone socket
Is there a way to set it up without having to connect the desktop in the lounge via an Ethernet Cable?
Plan is to use the wireless set up and the old WG111T USB with the desktop in the lounger....its close to the modem/router and will pick up the signal
I will then use the USB supplied WN111 v2 in the desktop in my office in the back bedroom
Any help on setting this up....if it is possible without using an Ethernet Cable would be gratefully recieved
Many thanks

Ouch! I've just seen the PCWorld price of £80 for that Netgear "deal". You're a rich man!How/What is the best way to set up this modem/router and USBReading the instructions it states i have to put in the CD and then connect the modem/router to the computer using a Ethernet Cable? Forgive me for being nosy, I'm just trying to [strike]case the joint[/strike] form a mental picture of the layout of your home.I will then use the USB supplied WN111 v2 in the desktop in my office in the back bedroom
So how does the Thomson router work in the office if it is nowhere near the phone line?
And if there is a phone line in the office (which is in the back bedroom), then why can't you connect the Netgear DGNB2100 to the desktop in the office to configure it, where there is also a phone socket?Any help on setting this up....if it is possible without using an Ethernet Cable would be gratefully recievedMany thanks
Take the DGNB2100 upstairs to the office (in the back bedroom), and connect it to the PC using an ethernet cable. Configure it as appropriate, confirm that wireless functions are working correctly, before siting it near the phone line.
Does that make sense?0 -
Ok,
to clarify
The main phone line is in the lounge in a corner. In the other corner of the room connected wirelessly via a WG111T to a thomson TG585 v7 is a desktop computer
Upstair in a back bedroom I have my home office. There isnt a phone line in this room.
Neither computer is close enough to connect any of them to the new router via an ethernet cable.
I have tried simply plugging the netgear router into the phone line. It does power up and the WG111T picks up a weak signal.......I do not get an internet light lit on the router as it states in the manual
Does that explain what you seek?
thanks in advance0 -

the netgear will need configuring with your ISP details - password, username, etc..
Since you cannot, according to the user manual, configure the device for the first time over a wireless connection, you will have to connect it by ethernet.
i would guess that you can do that initial configuration without the netgear being plugged into the phone line.
failing that, you will have to temporarily move the PC nearer to the phone line so that you can configure the router with it connected to the phone line, or else run a long phone line extension back to the PC's current location.
is that what the problem is, or have i still not understood?0 -
I have just had a thought
Can i set this up using my laptop?
It has wireless built in so unsure if i will be able to set up the router using ethernet cable0 -
You will still need to do the initial set up as mentioned before using an ethernet cable from your PC or laptop - either will do. Your laptop will/should have an ethernet port in addition to the wireless.0
-
will i need to disable the laptop wireless?
how do i do that0 -
Plugging in the ethernet cable will give you the ethernet connection you need.
But if necessary just switch off wireless using the wireless on/off switch or the 'Fn' key and the relevant marked key.
Why are you so detemined to try and do the set up by wireless?-the initial set up should be done by ethernet. Once that is working, configure the wireless side.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Am working my way through it
Can't recall what my username and password are for my ISP........0 -
Then you're not going to get much further without those. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

why or how would i remember a password that i set up 2 years ago and have never had the requirement to use it since0
