tried alt+f10 to do factory restore, process started up and then after about 2mins, gave error message saying unable to restore!0

factory restore will wipe your data if it was on the c drive
however, you may possibly get some back by downloading recuva and doing a deep scan
if factory restore didn't work, your only option is an os disk really!!

I would try the original OS disk first, then try a system restore disk (if you made one, unsure if it would work if startup doesn't).
If nothing works and you need to buy another hard drive, make sure you know what you are doing if you replace it yourself. Its not too difficult but you dont want to get something wrong and cause other problems. you can always get a friend to help of can look for tutorials online (maybe a walk through on youtube)0
