sony viao - hard drive

Options
i have a sony viao laptop which crashed and would not restart.
my brother identified that the reason is that the hard drive is broken and it needs a new one.
does anyone know what sort of price i would be looking at to get this done? and any recommendations of where i shoudl go ?

thanks

Changing the drive takes about 10 minutes tops and you can do it yourself. New hard drives cost from about £30 up depending on capacity The main issue is whether you have an OS disc and whether you need to recover your data from the old drive.
From the minimal info you have given I would be doubtful that the drive has actually suffered physical failure, rather than just the OS failing to load.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    thanks all.

    model number is PCG-6N1L

i don't think i have the original OS disk. i'll go look though.

when you press the power button it makes the start up 'beep' and shows the vaio symbol but then it just shuts down!

cheers. so if i get the correct OS disk and reload it, it could be fine?
from what i understand, data recovery is rather pricey?!

correction on that last bit i just tried it again (havent looked at it for a while) - it gets past the vaio symbol, has the statement about windows being started either in safe mode or normally due to previous shutdown - select either option to go forward - and so then you get to the xp loading screen for about 3 seconds before it reboots itself.
