Without a long winded story:-
I ended up being in a job as a Production Engineer, with no engineering qualifications at all.
Came the cut backs, and I was made redundant, while two graduate Engineers were kept on. Fair enough!
BUT,,,,I manage to get another job in the same place, in the laboratory.
What REALLY annoyed me, was I kept getting called out to other departments, to sort out problems the graduate Engineer's couldn't.
On one occasion, the Engineer couldn't sort a problem, so they called out an outside contractor, and they couldn't sort it out either.
They got me (amidst many whinges from me) out from my job, and I identifed the problem within a couple of minutes.

So no, I don't think qualifications are as important as they used to be.
