Nokia N8 or HTC Incredible S

Hi,

I can upgrade my phone (on Vodafone) and am trying to decide between the Nokia N8 and the HTC Incredible S (and to a lesser extent the HTC Desire S but the camera isn't as good). I've had Nokia's for the past 5 years or so and really fancy a change but the 12MP camera and free sat nav on the N8 quite appeals. The fact that the Symbian operating system will soon be pretty much obsolete puts me off.

I've had a try on the HTC for a couple of minutes in the Carphone Warehouse but it's quite difficult without the sales consultants asking every 30 seconds if I'm ok and in the end I get fed up and leave. Mobiles.co.uk have some reasonable cashback deals on the handset. As it's exclusive to the Carphone Warehouse group I'd have to get it from one of their companies whereas the Nokia N8 and HTC Desire S I could shop around anywhere for the best deal. Is there any advantage of buying direct from Vodafone (I know I can't if I went for the Incredible S).

Has anyone got experience of using both handsets and what did you think?

Thanks

    Why?
I have not looked much, but I see it, for example, at buymobilephones, some 'intomobilephones', mobilephonesdirect...

I've got no idea why the HTC Incredible S is exclusive to the Carphone Warehouse group it's what I read.

I've got an N8 which I'm using to access this forum. What decided it for me was the audio, hardware, camera, and long battery life.

It depends what your priorities are:

With the HTC models they do seem to work seamlessly, very smooth and I'd go as far to say fun to use. The Nokias on the otherhand that I have tried (n8 included) were clunky, things seemed to 'flash' and pages felt sort of 'hard' rather then the smoothness of the HTC models.

However, the HTC batteries leave alot to be desired, its a twice a day charge for most people, those who get away with once a day from what I can gather don't use the phone as heavily or have to sacrifice many of the frills and ribbons so to speak to get the phone through the day. I'm sorry but this does not seem like a phone fit-for-purpose for that reason.

It depends on whats important to you as with most contracts, 12 months is rare and even so that would mean the handset would be with you for a long time yet. I'd go back to the store, plug in a set of earphones that way if someone asks if you need any help you can feign loud music being played above their voices! Otherwise what I tend to do is to look at the straight (not harshly but firmly) and say "no, I still don't need help, you/your collegue/s asked me that 30 seconds ago" It seems to have them back off.

OH has the Nokia N8 and he loves it. The video on it is superb and the battery life is excellent. Annoyingly he got his with Orange and only pays £15 a month!! He hasn't been with O as long as I've been with Vodafone.

I'm looking at N8 and Samsung Galaxy2 but need to get a decent deal before I decide. I crossed off HTC because of battery life. Have you looked at SG2?

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm pretty much decided on the HTC Incredible S as the reviews are good and think it looks great. I'm going to go into Carphone Warehouse over the weekend to have another try on it hopefully. The Samsung Galaxy S2 does really appeal also but I think the screen at 4.3 inches is really too big but do love it being so thin. The N8's hardware really is impressive but it's the clunkiness of the software that puts me off and having had Nokia's for the past few years just fancy a change.
