Wanting to buy a shower screen for our newly fitted bathroom. What should I look out for? Anyone had experience of the sliding screens - do they stick?

We bought a folding shower screen with five panels. It easily folds back against the wall when not in use, increasing space.0

We bought this 3 years ago and it is brilliant.

easy to clean unlike those folding screens, I always find they get red mould after a while at the bits you can't quite get into clean.
It just works the same as roller blinds, just leave it down after a shower to let it dry!
It is a bit expensive but great and long lasting and also no unsightly shower screens etc in view just roll it up and it is just about flush with the ceiling!!

dear linlin, firstly the more complicated the screen the more joints etc the more there is to go wrong, we always start by recommending a single panel screen. will this do for you? if so go down this route. you are looking for fully toughned saftey glass to british standard, beware of some cheap imports that may not break safely if damaged. Ideally you should be looking for minimum 5mm thick glass and pay careful attention to the seals. if you have to go for a multipanel screen our experience over the years woul not advise on the slider screens. we have never seen one that lasts. for top quality at good price i would suggest provex make a good screen, Daryl is more expensive, but they do a v good 4/5 multipanel screen.0

Thanks for the response. The Daryl multipanel screen looks excellent but at over £500 it should!! The Provex screens are more in line with our price range but do the single panel screens swing out from the bath? A fixed screen would limit access into/out of the bath. I tried phoning their experts, but no one around........will try tomorrow.0

Always try a local glass company. We recently fitted a glass screen in our ensuite which fixed to the floor and wall. It is 2300mm high and 880mm wide. I looked at the Daryl prices and the standard size which was nowhere near tall enough was around £700, it said to phone them for a custom piece. We bought ours for £250, plus £65 for the chrome floor and wall channels, from our local glass supplier. Amazing difference!!!0

With this product like many others you get what you pay for, Daryl are good top of the range products, the best on the market are Majestic and it's reflected int he price.
The best quality budget products I ever came across were Roman, and in fact I found some others twice the price of these and not constructed as well.

And as the above poster suggests, I often used to get items made bespoke, when it came to top end fits, I'd use Preedy glass a commercial manufacturer.0 -
Definitely easier to clean a single-panel screen. Would suggest going for one with a lot of frosting on it, if not all frosted - it hides the watermarks and fingerprints, otherwise you'll be scrubbing it every time you take a shower.0

I personally wouldn't have a shower screen as they get dirty and mouldy and are very hard to clean.
I used to work for age concern and the amount of houses i went into that had shower screens that just wouldn't clean was enough to put me off them for life.
We have a shower curtain and i can put it in the washing machine and they are cheap enought to change when they get too bad to clean.
Shower screens look lovely but just don't seem to stay that way. Just my opinion. When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile0 -
Personally i would buy a single glass screen! far easier to clean!
With regard to cleaning i spray shower shine every day and it stays really clean and shiny without any water marks!0 -
Unfortunately, I can't use that, owing to it being a slip hazard for people a bit unsteady on their feet. I just clean it with Astonish bathroom spray once a week, and in the meantime, the frosting hides a multitude!
I've never had the problems with mould etc that emilyt describes, but then it's toughened glass with all stainless steel fittings (which inhibit mould growth) and is only a single panel. I can imagine that a multi-fold PVC one would harbour fungal and bacterial growth much more.0
