  • I would challenge the charges under treating customers fairly grounds.

    Financial service providers have an obligation to treat customers fairly. This does not mean treating everybody in the same way it requires them to take a customers circumstances into account. On the other hand it doesn't allow you to whatever you want.

    I would get your son to write to them asking for a reduction in the charges and making an offer outlining the total amount he's willing to pay back and on what terms. Justify it using treating customers fairly.

    If they come back with a stupid response simply threaten to complain to the ombudsman. They won't want the hassle or expense of fighting it so they will accept the offer or something close to it.

    the letter telling them he can pay £25 per month has already gone!!!! it went on the 12th may but we all know how long it takes for barclaycard to reply. i suppose now its a waste of time asking for a reduction in the charges at this late stage?????
