Car h.p

Hi in 2008 I bought a car, the price on the window was £7995. Minus the trade in value of my old car £1395 making it £6600.
Now heres my question, the price on the window was £7995 didn't say £7995 +vat I wasn't made aware that I was been charged vat. So I thought I was getting a bargain car. Guess not as they added vat to various other charge and admin fees.

So the total price for my £6600 car was actualy £8864 add the 14.5apr gives me a grand total of £11729.
I know I should have gone over the details with more care, but I got lost in the moment.. Now 3years on sorting paper work out I came across the order form for the car. It was with my hand book not the hp agreement..

Any one think i've had my pants down? Because I do:D

Many thanks loceee80

Was the car Brand New? If so it attracts VAT, used cars dont, even ex demo's. It would be very strange for even a new car to be advertised in the window with a VAT exclusive price, the only other way that you may atract VAT I believe? is if it is a contract hire agreement, let us know some more details and will try and help!

You never had your pants pulled down at all, you simply failed to read the HP agreement before putting your name on the dotted line.

Sorry but when you signed the HP agreement it would have had the amount to be financed which will have been £8864 and it will have had the total amount payable. If you didn't notice the total amount to be financed was 17.5% more than the price on the screen then thats nobodies problem except yours for not checking.

I can only assume that in 2008 with an APR of 14.5% that you weren't that creditworthy and would have signed anything to get a car on chuckie.

Take it you sell cars then hammymum
Like I said wasn't told there was vat to be added. because if they would have said it was going to be nearly 9k after i'd part exd my car in i'd of told em to stick it.

If you went to asda and bought a chicken for 6 quid then looked at your reciept and you'd been billed £7.50 what would you think?(£7995 white washed on windscreen to me is the price you pay, unless it says +vat)

I might have been a bit nieve at the old age of 21 hence the 14.5apr too.
But I still didn't know you can add vat onto second hand items?.

Bought the car from evans halshaw 12 months old(second hand)

Any one want to give me an insight into what i've asked rather than try to be a smart a#!s. I would be greatful;)

Car was 12 months old 7k on the clock
tbh I said to the bloke im paying 170 a month for the car I traded in keep it the same and we've got a deal.
He kept it the same, I signed was happy, but I dug the hand book out for the radio code(new battery fitted)
And in the folder was this order purchase, with what i'd been charged for gap, tyre protection and pure guard paint protection(i only knew I had gap as id asked for it)

As well as 1200 quid vat on the car. I know its my responsibility to check hp aint arguing that, but I wasn't given this order purchase form to look over(wasn't given it in my hand anyways).

If the paperwork wasn't handed to you, how did your signature end up on it?

There is no signature on the order purchase form....
Bit that breaks down costings.(part with vat on)
    I signed h.p.
Like I said to start with can you charge vat on a second hand car? If you can't answer that question then don't post.....
as i'd like some one who knows the answer, to answer.

    Many thanks

Most of my money is spent on places where VAT is not inclusive so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask. However when I've bought something like a TV and thought the price being rung into the till was different than I was told, I've opened my mouth.
But I still didn't know you can add vat onto second hand items?.
Second hand goods are liable to VAT if the seller is VAT registered. Its a myth that they're not. There are some exceptions but they're the same as for new items.

It comes back to not reading what was put in front of you - the total amount to be financed - before you put your John Hancock on the finance agreement. The fact you didn't see the purchase order is of little relevance. The simple fact is you've paid 17.5% more than you were expecting is because the only bit of the finance agreement you read before signing it was:

    "Sign here___________________"

, certainly not the amount to be financed and the total payable. The fact you've not noticed this until 3 years later shows you pay absolutely no attention to things like that at all TBH. Hopefully this £1264 lesson may teach you to pay due diligence in future.
