my driving licence

I have a yearly review, Nov this year will be my first. Unsure when they will write out and if I will need to go through a medical. Which was pretty poor! I have mental health issues, yet the Doctor never asked anything! Blood taken and urine and usual things ie blood pressure etc.
I wonder if my licene will still reflect when I passed my test. As many things require a licence held for more than 1 year. For example Temp insurance or hire cars. The fact I have a medical review each year, does this mean I don't hold a full licence?0 -
I had to send my licence back permanently. Sad for me but good for everyone else - I'm blind. :rotfl:0

Bingo - yes it's Friedreich's Ataxia! Most call it FA for short, so sorry to confuse people. Anyway still waiting for a decision on my licence - my consultant neurologist is dragging his feet (can't blame him he's a busy guy) so have no decision as yet! The DVLA wrote to me and asked if I would gee him up (well not in those words) but can I assume I can still drive while I'm waiting?Me transmitte sursum, caledoni0 -

I know my condition was different: I didn't have to surrender my licence, just tell DVLA I'd had brain surgery. There were clear conditions on their website: not to drive for X months afterwards, be fit free, and then (I think) to have confirmation that I was safe to drive. In the end I asked my GP to give his opinion, he also checked the DVLA website and confirmed that in his opinion I was OK to drive.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
OH has paranoid delusional disorder, and his is every 3 years. It was renewed in January, but I seem to recall that the DVLA said he was fine to drive while they awaited a reply from his consultant psychiatrist - if his licence lapsed before they sent him a new one and he was stopped, to show the police his old licence and the letter in which they confirmed they were awaiting further information. Luckily the new licence turned up before the old one lapsed anyway but it might be useful to remember.
Bryando, OH had a hire car after our accident and they were fine with his licence, it does still reflect when he passed his test, on the back it still says June 1988. Its still a full licence, dont worry. The only thing that is different is that it has a shorter expiry date.
On the subject of notifiable conditions, I was told by a senior police officer that some serious heart conditions are non-notifiable!!! We were hit by an elderly driver with a heart condition and me, being in the line of work I am in, said surely he should have his licence promptly removed from him if he were as ill as they claimed he were at the scene  (he wasnt, clearly, he was well enough to be onto his insurance first thing on the Monday morning trying to claim it was our fault!!!) and he said 'Not all heart conditions are notifiable to the DVLA!' This is absolute lunacy - they made a big thing of saying this bloke who hit us had only just had heart surgery to which I said 'what the hell is he doing on the road then' but apparantly his condition didnt require notification!!!*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -
I had to get onto the PALS team to get mine to confirm to DVLA that I was OK to drive.
I think you need to check: you may find that if you search their website for your condition that there is great detail on the circumstances under which you are required to surrender your licence. And sometimes it may be that your GP can confirm whether or not you can drive.

I their recent letter (DVLA) I was told there was no need to contact them with regards to this. A bit ambiguous, as this doesn't clarify whether I can still drive. But as I haven't been told I can't then I guess it's ok. My previous licence was valid to 14th July 2011, so I have a few weeks.Me transmitte sursum, caledoni0 -
After pacemaker surgery you can drive within a week, you're not allowed to lift boxes for at least 8 weeks........go figure.0

It seems reasonable to me that if they have written without saying that you cannot drive until you hear back from them, that you can do so. However, I'd have thought it would all be on their website, I found it surprisingly informative!
Decided to ring them and they were a little shirty saying that I didn't need to call them. However, they said yes I was still ok to drive, but they still hadn't heard anything from my consultant.Me transmitte sursum, caledoni0 -
As a post script to this I now have a 'cover-note' which allows me to drive without having a licence. It has no expiry date, so I guess its valid ad infinitum, or until my consultant writes back to the DVLA!Me transmitte sursum, caledoni0
