Santanders freaky Friday cash machine

I went to withdraw £5.00 from a Santander cash machine and pressed for other amount. I inputted the quoted figure and it displayed the min was £10.00.

I then pressed for that figure and it issued two £5.00 notes.

Very strange indeed!

I think he means that because the machine had £5 notes in it, why would it not let him withdraw just £5 (one note) instead of having to withdraw £10 (two notes).

    It's slow, it's wrong, it's Santander.

Minimum withdrawal of £10 is common in any cash machines, not only Santander. I think here to prevent disappointment in the first instance, as there is no guarantee that there is always enough supply of £5 note in that cash machine ...

C'mon, it's 2011. Decent cash machines even tell you what notes they have available these days.

And what if you had taken the last of the £5 notes?

Then the machine would realise and raise the minimum withdrawal to £10, in the same way as when it runs out of £10 notes, it would raise the minimum to £20?

That is annoying. Ive never had a £5 note from a cash machine or the option to only take £5 always has been £10 although some are now £20 even more annoying.
