car needs MOT, what's a good price?

You need to get the balance right between price and are they going to rip you off.
Failing that, pay the full price (£58 probably) at a council run one if ones convenient for you.
Can nobody recommend a small local independent garage for you locally?
I pay £40 and trust the guy totally. There is absolutely nothing my cars have ever failed on that I have doubted in 20 years of going there.0 -
You anywhere near Stirling scotsman4th? Going to MOT my 106 after I'm finished with it to see if it'll pass and would prefer somewhere that won't see a 19 year old car and think of £££££0

Last time I paid £45 at a place in London that only does tests, no repairs or anything (a private business, not a council centre).
The current maximum fee is £54.85, so they shouldn't be charging more than that.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

Might still be in touch if I can't find a recommendation closer.0 -
As already mentioned by Benjus, the absolute maximum they can charge is £54.80.
The testing station however can charge less than this if they so desire.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
Just looked it up, National are doing them for £35 if you book online.0

Had a bad experience with national. Basically the took things apart in the engine bay and could not put it back together, they left the engine cover on the front seat at said I brought it in like that, then told me my car has the wrong engine. Had to get local indy to put it back together, cost me a fortune and the car came out worse than it went in.
Ask around people in the area to find a good local Indy. Don't just look at the attractive prices of the big names as it can cost you more in unnecessary work.0 -
One garage in the town near here is on £54.85 The garage the other end of town is on £45.
Garage I put mine through is the one we use through work has just risen slightly to £38. We have our own workshops and do all our own work so there is nothing to be gained from failing them.0
