I just had mine done today at a "Halfords Autocentre" (formerly National Autocentre). It was half price, and so I paid only £27.00 (well, he didn't have all the necessary change, and so couldn't charge me the correct half price amount of £27.42!:D).

Took them 35-40mins to do mine. I know Autocentre have a bad reputation for trying to rip people off but surprisngly they were OK, and they didn't try any "funny business" with me.

Just Google "half price mot halfords" and it should show up.

If you're worried about them ripping you off, then try and take someone who knows a bit about cars.

I remember last year the rear brake efficiency of my old Golf was below what it should be and they charged quite a lot to take them apart and clean them. I have a feeling driving it for a while braking quite hard would have done the same job.

Was quoted £58 at a National in Edinburgh. Seems expensive.

It is. And will be even more when (not if, when) they add the list of work that "needs" to be done. For the love of God (and your car and wallet) do not let these [CENSORED] anywhere near your car.

Work on the assumption that your car will "need" so much done to it, that it would be dangerous to drive it there. And don't.

See Martin's article, and take it to your local council's MOT testing depot. They have to do MOTs for the public but don't do maintenance. Therefore, they have no incentive to find unwanted work and can be trusted to tell you the truth.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
