Child bed wetting - How to deal with it ?

Hello I have not been on here for a while but after going out and buying another waterproof mattress protector today and am wondering how others have dealt with this situation before ?

Let me start off my daughter who was 5 in March was out of nappies very easily when she was 2 years old { maybe before that I cant remember exactly } . However she was out of nappies at night when she was 2 years old . All this she picked up on very quickly and I believe at the time I did a good job teaching her alongside her doing well at it at nursery too and there was very few accidents either. :o

A year ago we moved house which my dd has loved since we moved in and the best part of it is that her bedroom is bigger and more girly . The only thing is she has a cabin bed for the first time and has to climb up the ladders to get in bed .

Since we moved in she has started wetting the bed most nights and it becoming very expensive and the mattress is ruined . I am not sure if it is because of her bed { which we cannot change by the way } . As she is happy and seems to have no underlying problems that I am aware of .

Has this happened to anyone else before and how did you deal with it ?

I have made sure she does not have any drinks 2 hrs before bedtime , she goes to the toilet every night before bed . And she claims which I believe that she just does not wake up when she needs it . !!?!!

I have resorted back to how I first trained her where I set my alarm and get up in the night at 4pm and take her to the toilet myself - this sometimes works . But she is just not doing it herself .

Do you think I should put her airbed up on the floor until she gets the hang of going herself ? and have you any other suggestions please ???
sorry for the long post i just wanted to cover everything ;)

Could you not try the training nappies, im not sure what sizes they go up to but they are more like a pant than a nappy. This would prevent the matress getting wet and may make your little one wake up if it gets wet in the night and get her used to going to the tiolet again.

You may not be able to change the bed and it may well be this that is causing the psychological problem.
If I may make a suggestion, make a game of it and drag the matress down on the floor, make a story up as to why its on the floor, let her sleep on there. Do it for a week and see what happens.

She may be afraid of the ladder, she may be afraid of falling out during the night, bedwetting is normally 99% caused because of a physical upset.

If it works, sell the bed on ebay.................

Bless her and good luck to you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    Hi Keys

I am a health visitor who has a special interest in enuresis (bed wetting). I have worked at a specialist clinic so have loads of suggestions for you but it would be easier (if you would like to) to private message me as there are loads of questions that I would need to ask you about what you have tried / her history etc. Hope to hear from you soon.

I would advise you to go and see the school nurse. My daughter was very much the same as yours dry @ 2 and then suddenly started to wet the bed (sometimes 3 times in a night)
We were advised not to use training pants as it's seen as a step back, I had two duvets which I just washed with the covers on and I used the bed mats under her top sheet with a mattress protector under neath that.
The nurse thought my daughter's bladder had not matured enough and gave us a sheet to follow and fill in. My daughter is now nearly 8 she still occasionly has accidents and I do worry about sleepovers and about what will happen if she goes away with school.
It's very frustrating and I did spend nights crying as I changed the bed. I would just try lifting her before you. Go to bed. Sorry for rambling on and i'm on my phone and can't see if this makes any sense! Good luck x

    Thankyou for your comments .:o

I do not like the idea of her wearing training pants to be honest as I do not want her getting used to it - if you see what I mean !! ?!! However fletty I did not look at it from the angle of her feeling it wet on her skin before .

I do not shout at her for this as I always try to look at things differently and I am also a patient person :o And she seems a bit bothered about it herself but I do support her rather than making excuses for it thow . Thats why I was going to get her dora airbed out in the hope that it is quicker for her to get to the bathroom - but I am unsure if this is the right solution as this is something she uses for fun times like sleepovers sometimes .{they all have one each } .- but I do worry that it maybe the bed

100yoga I will message you now as I do not think this is good for her or myself at the moment and as a while has passed now I am getting a little concerned .

and I think I wil invest in some bed pad things also :o

It does seem a bit strange that she started once she had got her new bed. Is the bed quite high? She maybe is scared of coming down the ladder in the middle of the night.

My daughter has a mattress cover which goes on the mattress like a pillowcase, and zips up. It's the best cover I have ever had. Needs 2 people to put it on though, but once it's on you only need to take it off very rarely to wash (you can wipe it and just clean it with disinfectant). Kylie sheets are also very good. They tuck in on top of your sheets, and they soak up the wee.

Yes the bed is quite high has 4 steps - A bit of a long story but - It came with the house { brand new } and everything in her room is stored inside it basically , all toys etc . She LOVES it still though and shows everyone who visits the house - including the window cleaner lol !! :rotfl:

She seems to go up and down the ladders with no problem throughout the daytime . And when asked about the steps / height etc she seems fine about it .
The odd time she has slept in my bed she does it then aswell now so im still confused !!

We have a bedtime routine where as she calls it { carry me like a baby !! } to bed and I used to place her in bed after the toilet - now I just carry her and she walks up the steps for the last few weeks incase that was the reason !!

I will google kylie sheets now thanks - as I do not really want to be buying another new mattress just yet - and the protectors ive been using only seem to last about 6 weeks really .

There's some advice on this website which may help:

    http://www.eric.org.uk/

There are several reasons it could be:
-She's afraid of getting down the stairs (or may be a bit lazy/comfy?)
-She's a heavy sleeper - is she difficult to wake up at 4am? Does she fully wake up?
-Her bladder may not be developing as fast as she is - so could be a bit too small
    - It would be no harm maybe asking the school nurse - they see this all the time. If your school doesn't have one then your doctor may be able to refer you to a district school nurse.

Don't stress your daughter out - get a couple of waterproof sheets and just relax about it. It may just be a short phase and she'll grow out of it. It's a good idea to get her to drink plenty of water during the day and then stop all drinks at least two hours before bedtime. This can help her bladder to adjust to more liquid and should help keep her dry at night.

I know how stressful it can be - my oldest son still isn't dry at night and he's nearly 8. He goes through dry periods and then it starts again. It turns out his bladder capacity is very small for his age.

We wake him up but I do feel it's more for us than him - he's still half asleep and spraying the walls sometimes:eek:

Good luck with it! and try to remember it's only a small problem at the end of the day - even though it can be so frustrating!
