Moving Gas and electric meter

We are extending and need to move the electric and gas as the external wall they are on will soon be internal!

Have looked on national grid and eon websites but process is very confusing. You seem to book to have pipes moved and then have to arrange different people to move box but not sure who?? Very confused and the forms are eeeeeeekkk.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Did you have to book the moving of the box and the moving of the pipes seperately in both cases? if so, do you shop around for the moving of the box bit??

    Thanks xx:j

Want the whole lot moving as if don't will be inside and also in my new lounge! Front of house would be cheaper but for the sake of a few quid (!) would rather do it right.

Speak to your transport company - they will arrange, but when my gas was done the pipe was moved first, then the box and meter upgraded, then about a week later the hole was infilled (after a temporary gravel fill was dug back out)

Similar process for my leccy meter

    Hi HelenDaveKids,

For the gas meter, for moves over 1.5 metres you will need to arrange a service alteration with National Grid. Give them a call and they will let you know what will happen.

Moving the electricity meter depends on what area you are in, each distribution company will have their own process for this. In most cases, the service alteration will be chargeable by the distributor to the customer.

The first thing to do is establish who your distribution company is (E.ON can tell you this) and contact them, it may be that the distribution company will do the service alteration and the meter operator (MOP) will move the meter.

    Hope this helps.

    Helena :)

Sorry - Can I ask Helena a question please? Recently purchased house - renovating - (not living in it yet). Switched dual fuel to EON, but I currently have a meter that gives 3 readings. EON refuse to switch it - saying it wont affect my costings. I'm having gas central heating installed. Can you confirm this please? I would far rather have the electric meter switched & don't believe I should pay for this? Thanks

    We are in Nottinghamshire.

Have booked eon to come but do I also need to get someone to physically move the box?

    Thanks Everyone.

    Hi muskoka,

Is it an economy 7 meter, you would have a day rate, night rate and then the total?

If this is the case, we can bill you as if you had a one rate meter so you can keep the same meter, but we would just bill you differently by adding the two rates together. (I hope that makes sense :o)

I'm not sure why E.ON has said you can't change the meter, it may be because it's an RHT or economy 10 this means the electrics are wired in to the meter and you would need an electrician first to advise you.

If you can let me know what sort of meter and set up you have I can help a bit more.

Also an non essential meter exchange is chargeable to the customer this is now just over £50.

If your doing the house up and just need a normal electricity meter and will be having gas central heating, then you would be best with either a one rate meter or economy 7 meter (where we can add the rates together).

Hope this has helped a bit :)
