Cistern overflowing

I am hoping someone can help me here and save me the cost of calling out a plumber.

I noticed that the waste pipe from the downstairs toilet is constantly dripping. I looked in the cistern on the toilet and adjusting the ball !!!! thingy! When it flushes, it fills as you would expect and levels off below the waste pipe overflow, however, about an hour later it has risen further up and the excess water is again leaving through the waste pipe.

Any ideas what this could be?

the inlet valve is leaking. so letting water in slowly over time.
replace the washer/seal or the whole valve assembly.
    they are pretty cheap items.

    while your at it.....

I hate those old ball float valves, take ages to fill with all those noises.

Replaced all mine (4 loos) with THESE years ago, give no trouble, fills in seconds and shuts off cleanly, easy fit and only a tenner. You would need the right version for bottom inlet or side inlet depending on your tank.

They still suffer from limescale build up if your in a hard water area...

just replace your old inlet valve, videos available on the net :D

Ok, since I am a total novice when it comes to DIY, is this video the right sort of thing?

My toilet fills from the botton like the one in the video so I just need to buy a new inlet valve and away I go?

    Sorry for being dense!!

    yes thats it ok.
make sure all washers and any seals etc are in in good nick, otherwise you may have a small leak.

Thanks for your help. I think I will nip to Wickes and get myself a Torbeck valve tomorrow and attempt a bit of DIY over the weekend!

Ok, so I have changed it over, and the toilet doesn't carry on filling over the waste pipe now :)

Now I have a very small leak. It is coming from where I have circled on the attached photo.

I have tried draining the toilet and reconnecting the pipe again, ensuring everything is dry, but still the same thing. I can't tighten it any further.

    Any ideas?

have you put a fibre washer in there? better if its new and not the old one
also i would have wrapped some ptfe tape round the threads before doing it up
or maybe if the above is done it needs tightening slightly
will take you 5 mins with the right parts in hand

edit: also make sure that its not leaking from the white nut and dripping down giving the impression that the lower part is leaking

Thanks for the reply. Leak is definately coming from the bit pictured, have checked above it and it is dry.

Being simple here, the fibre washer, is that the little black rubber like round band? I used the existing one, can I just buy a new one from somewhere like B&Q?
