Sorry for your loss. My own idea would be forget-me-nots (although I think it is classed as a "wild flower"). They are supposed to self-seed too.

    Viburnum opulus "Roseum"

Or you could go for a golden privet and let a clematis alpina run through it for evergreen interest and Apr/May flowers.
  • how about a large pretty pot of daisys, cornflowers etc- with maybe blue bell and narsisuss? bulbs to flower in spring. I lke the idea of what i call innocent plants, not showy or brash but still bring us joy when they first appear. more a celebration of birth and life than the rememberance of death.
sorry about your loss btw. I am a member of a cat forum http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php if you want to chat with other cat lovers, they have a section called the rainbow bridge which is to remember all the furrballs that have passed over.

Thanks Jo, that is very thoughtful. I love all your suggestions and went armed with a list to my local garden centre. I ended up buying a lilac shrub - the selection was very small and this one smelt so lovely and had beautiful flowers. However I am more than a little clueless about plants and gardening and the spot where she is buried is in the grass with no border, by the wall in a shady spot. The soil is very thick and doesn't drain very well so not sure how well the lilac will do there.
