I marked a toilet whilst drilling the holes to secure it. I had big grey metallic scratches on after I'd finished! I did manage to get them of with some scouring cream and a heavy duty (nylon) scourer but it was hard work - so don't give up yet!
  • I moved into a flat which had a revolting grey loo like that - nothing worked until I took an old knife steel to it. Result was a loo that looked brand new.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Ok I haven't tried this one shot drain cleaner stuff so can't comment on that, but I use the Harpic 100% limescale remover and it works very well. Squirt it around the toilet and leave for a few hours and the limescale goes.

Alternatively, for really heavy deposits remove the water from the toilet pan first and leave for a few hours, then the limescale remover is not diluted, so more effective. Quite easy to remove the water, just get an old small short glass or container and bale it out into a bucket then soak up the rest and apply the remover. Only downside to this is obviously you will no longer have a water barrier whilst the toilet pan is empty, so the drain smell will come through, but no big deal really.

You may well have scratched the surface permanantly but as someone has already said you may have just left metal marks on the surface from the thing you used to scrape the limescale with. The best way to test this is to drain the toilet as mentioned already and get a much milder abrasive such as Jif cream and use one of the white non scratch pan scourers. Good luck

I use domestos pink bleach - its the only product that I have found that truly gets rid of all limescale, I leave it over night and in the morning the toilet is bright white again. Non of the other domestos' are as good I find
