Have been watching an onlocked HTC Wildfire phone for sale on Ebay, now the seller has added that it is locked into vodafone, but will cost only £5 to unlock.

Now is this correct or will it cost me more if i decided to buy it.
if i had known then what i know now

Have a feeling that Voda will only unlock it if your a Voda customer. So you might have to buy a Voda payg sim and then top it up before they'll unlock it (and £5 sound very cheap for a network unlock? Orange charge £20).

    Hi oysterman,

When we unlock a handset, it has to be requested for by the person that originally purchased it, as Jon 01 has mentioned.

You will need to request the seller to contact us to arrange this for you.

    Kind regards,

You are both assuming that the phone is really locked and the sellers not simply trying to get a bit more for it and that they would do this officially rather than go to a market trader with a dongle.

That's what vodafone thinks it can charge. A bloke on Whitechapel market did it for free when i bought a leather phone case off him.

It's only a little software programme that takes the IMEI of the phone and generates an unlock code, whether using an algorithmic calculation or through a hashtable that links to unlock codes in a database.
