    It says:

Foods you don't need to avoid

Shellfish, including prawns – as long as they are part of a hot meal and have been properly cooked
Yes this was the info I was given when I had youngest in 2003, prawns are ok hot, but not cold. i'm sure this advice must have changed between 2000 and 2003 cos I don't recall cold prawns being on the 'banned' list when I had eldest.

Mayo, what I was always told, is the bought jar stuff is ok (eg Hellmans) it's homemade mayo that would contain raw eggs which should be avoided. saying this it's still best to check what current advice is, as it does change.

i ate prawns through both my pregnancies, i also ate runny eggs but stayed away from blue vein cheeses.. probably coz i dont like them :D oh and also pate as its apparently got high vit a content.

they change their minds so often in what you can or can not eat during pregnancy they will probably stop you eating apples soon because of the green in the skin lol
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A

Prawns certainly weren't on the list last year when I was prengnat & regulary ate them hot & cold, including in sandwiches from boots/M & S etc. But then, even if they had been it wouldn't have mattered, I pretty much ignored the list of "banned" foods anyway & just used my common sense:rolleyes:

PS; My son was/is perfectly healthy & now loves prawns if that makes any difference!

Not a problem for me as the smell of fish made me feel sick.

Saying that, the taste was fine when I did have some. So long as they are properly cooked and very fresh, they should be OK.

When I was pregnant I ate seafood, eggs, peanuts, other nuts, had the odd guinness now and again, ate rare beef, probably had soft cheese and ALL my kids were full term healthy pregnancies, no allergies or ill effects.
Common sense is the best rule to follow.

I'm still wondering what is wrong with cold prawns  I read that guidance and am really glad my youngest is 13 :D I did note it said raw shell fish though I think and surely cold prawns have been cooked!

I'm a life long vegetarian apart from when I was pregnant - it was plaice with no. 1 and with no 2. I think I ate a prawn cocktail every day for months :o
I live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.

Too true!! When my mum was expecting me she was encouraged to eat liver twice a week beacuse it was high in vitamins, a bit of a problem for her because she went totally off meat & became a temporary vegaterian:rotfl:Of course now liver during pregnancy is a total no-no but it just shows how wrong even the best doctors can be & how it may be good that these things are revised all the time but don't bow to scare mongering, most of the time things will be fine.

As for the apples comment...many a thing said in jest : when my Nan was pregnant with my dad she had a craving for sour apples & ate pounds of unripe cooking apples, as a direct result my Dad has had a life long allergy to sugar:eek::eek::eek: So common sense really should prevail IMHO (and common sense really says don't eat unripe cooking apples anyway!).

  • cold prawns are safe as long as they are straight from the fridge and not at room temperature ie. not in the danger zone (4-75 degrees c to be safe)
