How to get contraceptive implant?

I recently went to the doctors to enquire about getting the contraceptive implant and he just flat out refused to do it!

He just said no no no, and went on about how they last for 5 years and what if i wanted another baby before that. i DO NOT want another baby full stop. even if i were to change my mind i definately dont want another within 5 years.

i am 23 and my son is almost 9 months old. he was born after a very unexpected pregnancy. i have PND and the very thought of having another child petrifies me! i am on the pill, although i am really bad at remembering to take it! so i need to have a different form of contraception! what can i do? can i go elsewhere to have it fitted? i live in NI if that makes a difference?

  • I have no idea how NI works but in England I'd tell you to go to the family planning clinic as they can provide it, does NI have anything similar?

Alternatively do you have the option of seeing a different doctor within your practice? It may be down to that individual doctors personal beliefs and a different doctor at the same practice may be more willing to help.

I'd ask what they recommend as an alternative which is temporary but does not require remembering to take daily.

Im from NI too and as far as i know they dont give it to you immediately as there has been so many looking to have it removed due to irregular bleeding etc and it costs the NHS about £100 a time to remove them. They give you the POP cerazette for 3 months as it is the same thing in the implant, if you have no problems then they go ahead with the implant

I wish they tried tablets with the same hormone here first too.

I warn you Dreambirdie, I wanted the implant for all the same reasons as you and it really disagreed with me.

I had mood swings (think PMT anger 90% of the time, in tears the other 10%) and they refused to take it out until I'd had it 6 months, by which point I had upset just about everyone, people have since said they avoided me because of how angry and bad tempered I was all the time, and I had put on a LOT of weight (size 12/14 to 18)

I'm not sure i would recommend it to someone who already suffers from PND.

Please don't shoot me, I'm only trying to help.

I had mine put in at a FP clinic for under 25's, they didn't check with my GP or anything.

    Hi Dreambirdie,

I live in England and I had the implant. Mine was supposed to last for three years and I chose is for the same reason as you. I was having trouble remembering to take my pill.

After a year I had to have it removed as AF would visit every two weeks.

My doctors were happy to fit it and when I went to them and explained why I wanted it out they were happy to remove it and put me back on the pill. They said that it's only a small percentage that didn't bleed at all and I was unfortunately one of the larger group that bled more.

Thing is, you don't know until you try so if you really want to try it then I would go to the family planning clinic or try another doctor as suggested.

If you don't want to fall pregnant your doctors should give you advise as to what to do, but in the end it's your body and your choice as to how you prevent pregnancy.

LOL i went on the cerazette ( same hormone as implant) after i had my son to try and calm down my PMS and i also had PND. Luckily i had no side effects although i did start to put on weight but dont know if this can be directly linked to the cerazette, anti depressants or thyroxine. although ive since stopped takin cerazette about a month ago and dont think ive lost any weight
Just goes to show how differently people can react to differnt medicine

My Oh has ha it done she ha had some lay problems with it an has been put on the mini pill. Besides that which is just annoying side effect she been fine.

I work college of mine ha it done and in the en ha it remove, she says it wasn't a problem having it removed.
  • dreambirdie, don't discount a coil - I've used them for ages without any problems. Usually they stay in there for years so once they're in you can forget about them. For me not having my hormones messed with was a big thing - the pill made me spotty and I put on a lot of weight. Go and speak to the clinic they'll be able to give you good advice.
    Whatever

I too had a horrible experience with the implant, it was an absolute living hell for the entire time I had it in - longer than I wanted it because the Doctors refused to remove it (2yrs:eek:) (guess it makes it look bad) in the end I had to go to hospital because I was so desperate to get it taken out....

I got put on cerezzete straight after (as its the same God knows why!) and it drove me to the blink of insanity, finally got put onto Microgynon and for the first time in years I felt 'normal' again
