Telescope help anyone?

Options
I've just received great help here a minute ago to get my router working so I thought I'd chance it one more time.

I got my DS a telescope for his Christmas. I cannae see out of it! I've tried everything and yes I have taken the lens cover off:D

It sits up in his room mocking me. Even when we had that lovely full moon recently I could see naff all. Anyone any good with them?

  • I Might be on the wrong track here but with a high powered rifle scope you can have the magnification set to high. Try backing off
the magnification and focusing and then gradually zooming in to the target.
As i said i might be wrong but it's worth a quick go.

Most have a spotter scope to assist with alignment but first things first - can you see anything through it in the daytime (stuff will probably be upside down but don't worry about that). If you try looking at a star with it way out of focus you'll see nowt but an error like that should be more obvious when used as a terrestrial telescope.

I've gone and given it a bash. Nothing!

When I look through it it's black. Nothing to see at all. It's a Jessop's telescope, I don't know the make and I got it half price for £70. Great bargain if it worked. I can't even find the instruction booklet.

It's on a tripod and it's got a big long cylinder. The ey part is at the top of the cylinder. God, what if I've got it round the wrong way?

I love the techie board because it both helps me and makes me feel like a simpleton at the same time. I twisted the thing that I think is the focus and it gets bigger and smaller, but I can't see a thing through the lens.

Looking on the Jessops website, they have a couple that could be the one you've got. They both mention that they have more than one eye piece. Have you tried taking the eye pieces out to check if there's any protective film on them?

You need to have the eyepiece in at the eye end. Go for the lower magnification one first. The higher the magnification, the dimmer the image. Also you'll actually need to find something to look at and its not that easy. Its even harder if you live in a large town, city or county with a large population as there is so much light pollution it masks many starts.

In addition to all the above, you need to give your eyes a few minutes to adjust to looking at low light. If you're constantly moving your eye away from the telescope into a lit room, you'll destroy all night vision.

    OP,
May I suggest that you visit 'Stargazers Lounge' biggest online community for these things and they will be very gentle with you :) I was in a similar boat having bought my DD one for xmas. With a very little help, we have seen Jupiter, Saturn and even the international Space Station.
