6 speed gear box replaced with 5 speed

So who remembers putting a 1600 into their Ford Anglia and swopping to a transit diff?
Good at the lights, but on the motorway.....0 -
Wouldn't work as changing the diff alters all the gears - so in the example of the Pinto-engined kit car if you changed the diff to make first gear 'longer' it would make fifth gear useless, as the speed required to keep the engine within its powerband would be far higher than is practical.
The best thing to do is to get a custom made 'box with a longer first gear, and a shorter fifth gear (as in a Westfield/Tiger etc type car, top speed is limited by wind resistance)
Ah, the rocket box, 0-60 without changing gear;)
Back to the original bit, there's every possibility that the speedo is now innaccurate as well, depending were the sensor is taken off the gearbox or final drive, and if the 2 versions of box were fitted with the same sized wheels.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

They can have the whole car back if they pay me for it.0

I had a 105E with a 1300 pre crossflow, not the 1340 Classic engine with a five bearing crank, first gear no use but good for 90 plus in top
Original poster wants to think themselves lucky they don't have a big Volvo, lad at work purchased a V70 automatic I think off flebay. Vehicle had a second hand gearbox fitted, wouldn't drive. He thought it was going to be a simple thing.
After lots of messing about managed to get it to drive after a fashion, eventually took it to a main dealer, the second-hand gearbox had to be programmed to the ecu, only way to do it hook up to a computer and the computer had to phone home (Volvo in Sweden) and re-programme the ecu.
Cost over £250, all the experts with their electronic gizmos could do nothing only the dealership. Turned out the second hand gearbox was duff, eventually cost him over £2,0000 -
Some auto gearboxes have a 'feature' where the gearbox talks to the ECU when changing gear so the engine backs off momentarily to give a smoother change.
My previous Pug 407 coupe had 29 computers which all had to talk to each other and the majority could only be set up by a main dealer.
e.g. headlamp washer controller had to talk to lights controller so headlamps were only washed when lights were on. And everything had to talk both dash display controllers.0 -

It was French, it had 28 backup computers just in case one went for a break“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Good at the lights, but on the motorway.....
A friend of mine put a 1098cc engine into his old split-screen Morris Minor (848cc side-valve). Remodelled the scuttle with a club hammer to accommodate the extra length. He never even thought about the diff. Top speed was still about 60mph but it got there at warp speed.0 -

On Saturday Steve phoned again to tell me that the MD had said I'd got a better gear box than before - I refused to talk about it.
MD phoned Monday and it's all a big misunderstanding and he just cannot understand why his lackey didn't explain it all to me. It's really simple.
The retailer ordered a 6 speed gearbox, but the supplier sent a 5 speed. Apparently that's easy to do because they both have the same part number! (Yeah right!) Anyway, because I'd been without my car for so long, they decided to fit the 5 speed, and would then replace it with the proper one when it arrives. So, there you go, there was never any intention to deceive..... and to make up for it they'll cover all the insurance costs I incurred when I had the courtesy car.
Here's my take:
They fitted a 5 speed to save them money, and hoped I wouldn't notice.
When I did notice they tried their best to persuade me to accept it, by fair means or foul, and when I wouldn't they changed the whole story!
And I believe the lackey was doing exactly what he was told to do by his boss!
Not got a date for when they'll do it, so I'm still on the case but moving along.
Thanks again for all your ideas and replies.0
