6 speed gear box replaced with 5 speed

After several weeks, I finally got my Golf TDI back from the dealer I purchased it from. Problem was a complete gearbox failure, but happily car was still under warranty. Drove off happily enough, and a bit later noticed that I had a new gear stick, and surprise, only 5 gears. Going back tomorrow to complain, but I just wondered if any of you have any opinions on this. Must lower the value of the car if nothing else. Any sage advice gratefully received.

I would get trading standards in on this.
Any garage that replaces a 6 speed gearbox with a 5 speed should be closed down.
They must have got your "new" gearbox from a scrapyard.
I wouldn't buy a Golf Tdi that had a 5speed box instead of a 6 speed gearbox.
To do it the other way round could be considered by some as an improvement, but not something to be done to a newish car.0 -
They've not put it right. Either get compensation for loss of value, get them to put a 6 speed box in or give you a full refund.
FWIW, I have a 6 speed box and the only time it gets in 6th is on the motorway and dual carriageways - pointless doing it other than when you can maintain 70MPH. Driving it at 5th instead of 6th has little to no effect on economy due to the lighter engine load.0 -
Many thanks for your replies. Given me some ammunition for tomorrow, and I think I'll call trading standards first too.0

Should have added that it's not a brand new car, it's 05 plate0

Doesn't matter how old it is, if it had six speeds when it went in it should have six speeds when it came out0

that is naughty, dito on the advice given, and complain to trading standards, wounder how many people they've done that to?0

Have you actually checked you only have 5 gears, or are you relying on a sticker on a new gearstick knob which may only show 5 gears?0

Cant believe i read this...thought it was a joke?!
Surely as soon as u drove away u notices it would have accelerated differently?
Every gear is different...not just a case of not having 6th. I have a pd engined vw with 6 speed and one with 5 both same bhp...they are completely different0 -

To some people a car is merely a mode of transport - they have no feelings towards it either way. They fuel it. They service it. They fix it when required. That type of person (and there are millions of them) would never notice.
Others love their car, polish it, add stickers, spoliers, larger wheels, turbos, all sorts of things. That type of person would notice.
You may notice a different gear ratio.....most others wouldn't
