Where to find great food at lowest prices in the supermarkets

Hi there
This is my first post on here. Just thought I'd like to share a little bit of my knowledge with you all.
3 times a day ,on average, the supermarket sorts through the shelves for stuff that may go out of date or the best before is on that day.
there will usually be a clearance section (you may have to look for this as it varies in supermarkets). There will be stuff you will have to use on that day but it will be much cheaper than getting it in advance. there will be stuff which you can freeze and will keep for a good amount of time. The Best Before label can be misleading but all it means is that the food will be the best quality before the said date. it doesn't mean that it will go off after that date. for example, just yesterday I went to my local supermarket and in the clearance area, I found there were packets of 6 pitta pockets, originally 57p but the clearance price was 6p! i've had 1 of those today (and frozen the others) and it is perfectly fine.
Another thing I've tried is Sainsburys Basic stuff. A particular favourite is their cola. Tastes just as good as the top brand but was only 48p for 2 litres. Just goes to show that supermarkets own are just as good as the top brands.
1 last thing. Which supermarket is the best value?
Asda is my overall favourite but is best value for big weekly shops.
Tesco is great for grabbing a few essentials.
Aldi is good if you don't mind what you are getting is a different brand to what you are used to. Also the layout is bit confusing and some stuff you may not be able to get.
Sainsburys is great for good tasting value range food and drink.
So there you go, a few tips for you to try out which may help you.

You can get even better cola from Spar (35p) or CoOp (29p) of their own brands.Sainsbury's basic frozen chicken portions are great value, especially for making BBQ chicken or bone out the thights for a curry ect.
Poundland's good value as well as Lidl's stuff.0 -
A lot of the reductions on Tesco reduced shelves aren't that great, often less than 20% on items which are almost out of date. Best reductions are on their "casualty corner" especially tinned goods and canned/bottled drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic). Lidl often has some good lines at reasonable prices. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Depends what time you hit Tesco.
We can virtually time it so we regularly get everything marked down to 10p. Then it's OH's job to get it into the freezer :rotfl:0 -

And you need to be careful about reduced prices on multi-buy offers.
E.g. item is £3.00 each but buy 2 for £5.00.
I've seen stuff on the 'reduced' shelf priced at £2.55 - and people are actually buying it!
I know that sometimes they only need one and maybe they don't have room in the freezer for the second, but I pointed it out to a guy in my local Tesco and he actually hadn't realised that it maybe wasn't such a good deal.
I tend to buy stuff when it's on offer, I have shelves in my garage filled with tinned tomatoes, cat food, tuna, tinned pulses, coffee - anything that won't go off and I know I'll use.
I've just bought 64 toilet rolls, quilted velvet 16 rolls for £5.00 from my local Co-op.
9 roll pack in Sainsbury's is £5.10.
I do menu-plan for 3 weeks at a time but if I see a bargain, I'll swop things around.
I often pop into our Tesco Metro and stop at 3 places - the reduced veg, reduced meat/cheese etc & reduced bread.0 -
I will not buy damaged tins.A friend who is a nurse once told me how she nursed someone who died of botulism, its a very painful death.0

And this patient had caught the botulism from a tin of dented peas??
Have you told ASda, Tesco etc...surely they would be keen to know this??Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why then you're as thick and stupid as the moderators on here - MSE ForumTeam0 -

This can work well IF you can get 2 of the reduced price item as the till is sometimes set to take (as your example) £1 off based on the till reading 2 items.
Also worth checking Waitrose & M&S for bargains as you can get some nice stuff with a good discount.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0
