PS 3 yellow light of death

Hi all

Was hoping people can advise me or share there experiences with the dreaded yellow light of death.

I brought the 60gb console in November 2007 and has been fine until a couple of days ago when the console got the yellow light error.

Now as I have a habit of keeping boxes I still have the box and the reciept inside it.

I contacted Sony who say £130 for a Refurbished replacement plus they will retrieve and return the disc which is trapped inside. as I'm not willing to pay I contacted Game, who refused to do anything as it is out of warranty. When quoting the SOGA they told me they only honour it for the first 3 years NOT the 6 years that is law and I will have to take them to he small claims court.

Now I also paid part cash and part credit card. I have written to Game (under SOGA) and to my credit card company (under consumer credit act, section 75) enclosig a copy of the receipt and photo of the console and box. They have 14 days to reply.

Now my question is, if it went to the small claims court what kind of costs am I looking at (other than the initial £50).

Also has anyone actually got as far as the court with a retailer regarding the PS3 or have the retailer always backed out before then?

Thanks

Phil

you weren't trying to play Portal 2 when you got the error were you?

Its just been on BBC about people reporting the same issue since a new patch released...

additionally I think you might be pushing the SOGA on this one, it has been quite a while since purchase...

Nope not portal 2. Heard the psn was back so went to play black ops and well it was dead.

So why would I be pushing SOGA? They say six years and I've had it just ove 3 after paying £400 forg the console. I would expect something of that value to last longer than it has!

I don't think you can push SOGA for this one...Because the console only has a what, one or two year warranty? The goods have lasted four years, and the judge will most likely dismiss it saying you've used it for four years anyway...Electrical goods do fail! Credit card company won't do anything either to be honest...Your best bet is just to buy a new one, try CEX or something.

Just because the SOGA says you can take a company to court within 6 years of the purchase, you need to consider that you *have used it for a 'reasonable time'!*

It's because of SOGA that Sony introduced the £130 for a refurbished console. This is the best you will get because you have had 4 years use out of it.

As for removing the disc. Switch the console off at the back. Then whilst holding the on/off button, switch it back on at the back. Keep your finger on the on/off button for a few seconds, and the disc should eject. I think I am remembering this right.

I've tried the disc trick but apparently it doesn't work on all consoles and surprise, mine is one it doesn't work on.

SOGA doesn't apply to Sony as a wholesaler, only to retailer (which is my understanding). Sony introduced the £130 as the consoles were dropping like flys due to dry soldiering joints.

The console has only lasted 3 1/2 years. I personally would expect something of that cost built by a highly reputable company to last longer.

Maybe I'm just clinging onto false hope.

wrap a towel around the console blocking all vents except the back one
then use a hairdryer on full power on the back vent for 3-5 minutes let it cool down for 10 minutes then it will turn on to get game
this solution will keep console working for a few days

It can't be a conincidence that thsi only happened when you got back on the PSN - look below:

The latest firmware update for PlayStation 3, v3.61 could be causing problems on some older PS3 models, claims Rockstar Games. The developer has recently released its detective adventure L.A. Noire, and some users have reported freezing during the game, as well as consoles overheating and shutting down. Rockstar believes this isn’t a fault with the game, but may be a result of the recent firmware update.

A post on the developer's support site reads:

"We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models."

"Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or 'Red Lighting' after having installed 3.61.

Seems this might also be related no?

    Hi

Yeah that does seem a bit of a coincidence. Not to sure what to do with this information though?

Might do a bit of research and see if Sony have commented. That might be linked to what the above post was saying about Portal 2.

It was me who made the portal 2 comment ;)

It was on newsbeat on BBC Radio 1 today - apparently lots of people have been affected...

Thanks for that. Might give Sony a call (although the lines are probably jammed)
