MSE's No advertising promise

:(MSE states that it is free of ads. However, I seem to be continually pestered by a pop-up message that says the current site is trying to open a facebook page. That may not strictly be advertising, but I find it equally (if not more) annoying. Can somebody please explain:
a) what it is actually trying to do (and why?)
b) if there is anyting that I can do to stop it.

To be fair it's probably not MSE that's causing the problem.

That will probably be a cookie from another website or bug stored on your browser (commonly seen to be tracking a users activity).

You'd probably benefit from cleaning your cache and running stored data and run a quick virus scan.

Try going to UserCP (link at the top of the page), Options and at the bottom change from use Forum Default or New Look to Old Look. If the problem goes away it will suggest that it's related to the Facebook things in the new look.

I'm guessing that you have some antivirus software installed that alerts you when a page attempts to load something from Facebook.
