Cost of Eating Out in Tenerife?

Hiya,

Partner and I are going to Playa de las Americas in 7 weeks, we booked a half board option as that actually worked out cheaper than all the self catering options, but usually we prefer to eat at different places in the evening if possible. Has anyone been there in the last year or so and can give me an idea of how much food and drink costs in this resort (so we will know how much money to budget)? A few people have told me that prices have risen significantly in the past couple of years but not been able to give any figures.

Also is there any type of goods that are especially good value in Tenerife that is worth us buying to bring back?

Thanks, Sarah.

We were there last summer (and are going again in August this year). The 4 of us ate out every night and I think the most we paid was 50 euros (£34?)including drinks. With 2 kids, couldn't comment on bar prices in general (except that they seemed to have a 2 tier pricing structure depending on whether it was daytime or nightime!).

You will be accosted on the street outside most restaurants by staff asking you to dine in their restaurants. Look at the menus and, if you're not interested, a firm No Thanks will normally do.

    I can recommend 2 restaurants:

Restaurant Playa Sol - on the sea front and 400m from Veronicas toward Los Cristianos. Get there around 8pm (in July anyway), ask for a front row table, and watch the sun set over the ocean through the palm trees whilst you're drinking your complimentary glass of sangria and scanning the menu. (Paint a good picture, don't I!).

An Italian place (name escapes me now), above the subway to the Parque Santiago shopping complex. Excellent pizza/pasta at good prices.

Regarding the goods, be VERY, VERY careful with the consumer electronics, ie cameras, camcorders etc, which, on the face of it, appear absolute bargains. If you check out websites such as https://www.holiday-truth.com you will find many stories of people getting ripped off.

Cigarettes etc are also very cheap but don't get greedy because the Canaries, whilst being part of Spain, are classed as being outside the EU for duty free. Therefore the allowance is 200/person.

Finally, check out reviews of your hotel on...

Yes I'd agree with Yorkshireboy the Italian is excellent. Name escapes me too but in was in the Parque Santiago area so it must be the same one!

Avoid the places that offer 50% off, can't remember name of that either but it was a "steak house" type place, I'm sure there are a few of them. The drinks were packed with ice so you end up ordering extra drinks. In the end, after expecting a cheap meal, it ended up being the most expensive of the holiday. Plus the fact that the baked potato they served up was rotten didn't help either.
