I'm a Mac user myself so I'm not trolling but many seem to be living in some kind of fantasy world where they think OS X is invincible to malware.

I suggest those of that persuasion read and inwardly digest:

I am completely ignoring you post, malware doesn't exist on OSX it is the most stablest, most bestest interface ever, most user friendliest, most "just works'est" OS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! and you are just telling lies, just like those heathens who try and tell me about evolution (which is just a theory and not fact like intelligent design) and those idiots thinking (misguidedly) that the earth is more than 5000 years old, dinosaurs aren't contemporary with man, and a 4000 year old book that contradicts itself constantly is to be taken a literal fact! What an idiot you are!

If Mac OSX 'just works', how come my son has had to do 3 'restore to factory settings' in 18 months.

Interesting point in recent superbrands-technology prog which showed apple fanboy had same brain behaviour as religious believer.

The Apple lot are religious - I remember years back they told us we didn't need colour displays on our computers.
Then there was the time where Apple MIPS were faster than Intel MIPS.
OS X is a version of the UNIX operating system, which pre-dates and is superior to Windows, but it is absolutely not 100% rock solid.

There was also that problem with Skype that only affected Macs recently - it was a major attack vector, but luckily plugged before anyone abused it. It could have been very messy if they had - how quickly would that have spread between mac fanatics? Horrible thought.

Even more horrible is that some of the zealots would have still ignored the problem. It's not a religious thing, it is a cult thing. All the same deification and quasi-religious experiences...

Personally, I couldn't really care. I use both. OSX makes me mildly irritated at times by making window resizing that bit more tedious having to use the one resize handle in the bottom rh corner, so takes more mouse work (move, resize, move instead of just resising from the top, for instance), and the lack of a right-click on the touchpad is just tedious, but then the GNOME desktop irritates me in other ways. I don't have any problem with apple hardware per se, the OS does function, but the creepy and vocal fanbois do scare me.

I wonder if you can think of anyone credible that thinks like this, and that you are not just giving credence to the opinions of a small group of teenagers on a tech blog.

Yep, there are a few free antivirus programs out there for Mac, just run those.

Worst case scenario, it can't be any worse than Window's Malware situation
